Excerpt from History of My Bennett Ancestors: by Mrs. R. T. Messer (Herma Jarrett)
Milas Edward Bennett became a doctor of medicine. He graduated from the medical school of Vanderbilt University and was valedictorian of his class. He married Esther Rogers, daughter of Hiram and Ellander Ferguson Rogers. At that time, before the days of cars and good roads, it was hard to get a doctor to Fines Creek, so he bought a home and built up a big practice there. In the spring of 1898 I think it was, he was stricken with appendicitis. Because he was a large man weighing about 240 pounds, the doctors said it would be fatal to operate, so five doctor friends stood by and let him die. Today his life would have been saved. He left three small children, Reva, Sigsbee, and Milas, Jr., who was six weeks old when his father died. Aunt Esther took the children and returned to her father's home and reared them there. Reva married Robert Green, son of Sam Green and Sarah Noland Green. She died young, just as her father did. Waited too long for an appendix operation. She left some small children. Of course they were grown long ago, but I have lost track of them. Sigsbee was working at Enka and living in Asheville the last I heard of him. He was not married, an old bachelor. Milas was living in Asheville at last account, married and had two grown daughters. I am getting too old to keep up with all the youngsters.
