Simon was born about 1739. His parents were Guillaume Benoit and Marie Josèphe Gautrot. He was recorded at 13 years of age on the 1752 "La Roque" census on Ile Royale (present-day Cape Breton) in Rivière aux Habitants.[1]
He married Louise Gervaise Dugas around 1762[2]and their marriage was revalidated on 7 October 1771 in D'Escousse, Richmond, Colony of Nova Scotia.[3][4]
Baptisms for four of their children are found in Bailly's register.[5]

His father Guillaume is listed as the 46-year old builder and owner of a saw-mill, native of la Cadie and married to Joseph Benoist, aged 50 years. Their land was covered with trees capable of producing fine building lumber.
