Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
John Bickerton was a Virginia colonist.

John is estimated to have been born about 1700, possibly in Maryland or England although which is unconfirmed. The antecedents of Maj. John Bickerton are not known, but it is certain that he came to Virginia from Maryland and was associated with the Todds and Days. There is a record of a John Bickerton who immigrated to the Colonies from England in 1722. It is possible, but unconfirmed, that entry refers to this John Bickerton.

  • Name: John Bickerton
    • Arrival year: 1722
    • Arrival Place: Annapolis, Maryland
    • Primary Immigrant: Bickerton, John
    • Source Publication Code: 1229.10[1]

John Bickerton appeared in St. Paul’s Parish, Hanover County, Virginia where he married Mary Todd, daughter of Philip Todd and Ann Day, about 1728. John and Mary had known children:

  1. John Todd Bickerton married Martha LNU;
  2. Alice Bickerton married John Winston on Feb 3, 1746;
  3. Anne Bickerton married George Webb;
  4. Philip Bickerton died without issue. [2]

Some references assert John and Mary also had a daughter Elizabeth Bickerton who married Lewis Webb. However, there is a problem with this. According to sources in Winston of Virginia and Allied Families, Lewis Webb was the son of George Webb and his first wife. George married as second wife, Anne Bickerton, daughter of John Bickerton. If Lewis Webb married an Elizabeth who was the daughter of John Bickerton, he would have been marrying his stepmother's younger sister. No evidence has been found confirming that John Bickerton had a daughter Elizabeth.[2] ( note: George Webb was married to Anne Bickerton on June 4, 1752 by Rev. Patrick Henry. Witnesses were Mr. and Mrs. Hubbard, Mr. and Mrs. Booth and Elizabeth Bickerton. Rev. Patrick Henry was rector of St. Paul's Parish in Hanover, Va.)

John Bickerton had the following patents for land:

  • June 10, 1740 for 3,500 acres in Hanover County
  • September 20, 1745 for 200 acres in Goochland County
  • September 22, 1766 (with William Markham) for 340 acres in "Lunenburg now Bedford on both sides middle fork of Falling River."[2]

John Bickerton was very active in his community. He served as vestry man, processioner and Church Warden for Saint Pauls Parish, Hanover County, Virginia from at least 1743 until his death in 1770.

At a Vestry held for St Pauls Parish ye 7th day of May 1743 ...
Capt Charles Hudson this day resign'd his Office of a Vestry man .... Capt John Bickerton was this day Elected a Vestry man in the room of Capt Charles Hudson, who took the Oaths enjoyn'd by Law, Subscribd, ye Test.[3]
At a Vestry appointed and held for Saint Pauls Parish at the Poor House on Thursday the 27th day of September 1770:
John Smith Gent is Chosen a vestry man in the room of John Bickerton Gent. deceased, and it is Ordered that he have notice thereof that he may Quallifie accordingly.[3][4]

It is interesting to see what a gentleman purchased for his household in 1743.

Bickerton-133 and Bickerton-5 appear to represent the same person because: same birth/death dates; both married to Mary Todd
