Ann married Richard Mather, her deceased husband's brother, on 23 May 1843 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. Both were of full age (21 or more) and lived in Windle; Richard was a stone mason and hadn't been married before, Ann was a widow. Their fathers were named as John Mather (stone mason) and John Birchall (wheelright). The witnesses were Edward Boardman and Susannah Birchall.

The 1843 marriage wasn't legally valid by the laws of the day, but since the Old Testament supported such marriages, it was a controversial and possibly confusing issue for people.
Richard and Ann's daughter Jane was born in 1843 in St Helens, Lancashire.
