Biography

Ann Birchall was born in about 1806 in St Helens, Lancashire.

Ann married Thomas Mather on 4 Jul 1825 at All Saints Church in Wigan, Lancashire. Both were of the parish of Wigan; the witnesses were Richard Mather and Charles Mather. [1]

Their daughter Elizabeth was christened on 18 Sep 1825 at St Aidan's Church in Billinge, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as mason, and the family's address as Billinge. [2]

Their son John was christened on 13 Aug 1826 at St Aidan's Church in Billinge, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as mason, and the family's address as Billinge. [3]

Their son Thomas was christened on 23 Mar 1828 at St Aidan's Church in Billinge, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as delfman, and the family's address as Billinge. [4]

Their daughter Mary was christened on 8 Feb 1829 at St Aidan's Church in Billinge, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as mason, and the family's address as Billinge. [5]

By June 6th 1841, Ann was living in Liverpool Street, Windle. (Her age is misrecorded.) [13]

Ann married Richard Mather, her deceased husband's brother, on 23 May 1843 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. Both were of full age (21 or more) and lived in Windle; Richard was a stone mason and hadn't been married before, Ann was a widow. Their fathers were named as John Mather (stone mason) and John Birchall (wheelright). The witnesses were Edward Boardman and Susannah Birchall. [14]

The 1843 marriage wasn't legally valid by the laws of the day, but since the Old Testament supported such marriages, it was a controversial and possibly confusing issue for people.

Richard and Ann's daughter Jane was born in 1843 in St Helens, Lancashire. [15]

Their son William was born in 1845 in St Helens, Lancashire. [16] He was christened on 10 Nov 1845 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as stone mason, and the family's address as Chapel Terrace. [17] He died at 8 months old, and was buried on 27 May 1846 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. His address was recorded as Windle. [18]

Another son William was born in 1849 in St Helens, Lancashire. [19]

By March 30th 1851, they were living at 8 John Street, Eccleston. Richard was a stone mason. [20]

Ann died in 1855, and was buried on 2 Jun 1855 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. Her age was recorded as 48, and her address as Windle. [21]
