c1801 Joseph was born at Edmonton House, the son of James Curtis Bird who was in charge of the HBC post. Using birth date he provided in his Scrip application.
1815 He joined the Hudson's Bay Company as an apprentice, employed in the Edmonton district until1818-19, referred to as an active and industrious young man.
1819 he moved to the Red River colony and was baptized, Jan. 12, 1826.
In 1821, Joseph married Elizabeth (Betsy) Thomas in Red River. They had at least 12 children:
The Red River Settlement census of 1827 has Joseph living on lot #197 with a wife, son and daughter. 2 acres of land..
In 1835 Joseph is listed in the Red River personal property register as having 3 horses, 11 cows, 10 acres and on lot 26.
In 1843 Joseph is living with his wife, 3 sons and 5 daughters now on 13 acres of land.
In a letter to his brother, James Sutherland suggested Joseph "is a merchant - - rather fond of the bottle" [1]
