Biography

Mary (Bird) Lane was a Canadian First Peoples and member of the Metis Nation.

Mary was born 1829 in Red River the daughter of James Bird and Elizabeth Montour.

BIRD, Mary. baptized 11 October 1829 Red River; named in father’s will of 21 March 1829; 1st married 1842 Red River; named in father’s will of 21 March 1855; 2d married 18 October 1860 St. John’s, Red River; died before 1870.

She first married in 1842 Hector McKenzie (b1788 the son of Charles McKENZIE and Mary McKAY. Hector passed away in 1889 and at the time was with his second wife [1] Sarah Anne Eric and with a son Logan.

  • McKENZIE, Hugh

She second married in 1860 William Douglas Lane (Irishman) the son of John Lane. His first wife was Eliza Lee (nee Lewis). He appears as a widow in the 1870 Canada Census living with his daughter Eliza.

Children:

  • LANE, Eliza Harriet. Born 19 May 1863

A Find-A-Grave bio lists a Mary Lane died in 1864. This may be her? [2]

In 1885 Eliza applied for Metis Scrip [3] Mary died 1864
