James was born on 22 October 1825 and baptised at Hamilton on 9 November 1825. He was the fifth of eight children of David Black and Ann Scott. [1]
At the 1841 census James is living at Cadzow St, Hamilton with father (Baker & Grocer) and 5 siblings. [2] At the 1851 census James is a Warehouseman lodging at Haughead House Govan with his brother John. [3]
In 1861 James is a Calico Printers Salesman living at Myrtle Cottage, Govan with his brother Thomas and sister Marion. They have a 9 year old servant [4]
James married Christina Hood at Riccarton, Ayrshire on 29 April 1862 [5] There were 6 children from the marriage

From the birth places of children it is likely that James and Christina lived at Myrtle Cottage until 1866 before moving to 3 Cobden Place, Cathcart where they lived with Christina's mother and sister [6] At the 1881 census Christina's mother is no longer living with the family [7][8] In 1901 James is still living at 3 Cobden Place, Cathcart, Lanarkshire. He is now a dry goods manufacturers agent [9]
James is living at 3 Cobden Place, Mt Florida, Glasgow on 10 February 1904 when he is granted probate to his sister Marion's estate [10]
James died at 3 Cobden Place Mt Florida, Glasgow on 16 January 1911. Executors of his estate of £2950 0s 7d were sons David and James Alexander. [12][13][14]
