Biography

Scottish flag
James Black was born in Scotland.

James was born on 22 October 1825 and baptised at Hamilton on 9 November 1825. He was the fifth of eight children of David Black and Ann Scott. [1]

At the 1841 census James is living at Cadzow St, Hamilton with father (Baker & Grocer) and 5 siblings. [2] At the 1851 census James is a Warehouseman lodging at Haughead House Govan with his brother John. [3]

In 1861 James is a Calico Printers Salesman living at Myrtle Cottage, Govan with his brother Thomas and sister Marion. They have a 9 year old servant [4]

James married Christina Hood at Riccarton, Ayrshire on 29 April 1862 [5] There were 6 children from the marriage

John Petrie Black - Govan 1862
Jessie Eliza Black - Govan 1864
William Hood Black - Govan 1866
David Black - Cathcart 1869
James Alexander Black - Cathcart 1872
Annie Marion Scott Black - Cathcart 1875

From the birth places of children it is likely that James and Christina lived at Myrtle Cottage until 1866 before moving to 3 Cobden Place, Cathcart where they lived with Christina's mother and sister [6] At the 1881 census Christina's mother is no longer living with the family [7] [8] In 1901 James is still living at 3 Cobden Place, Cathcart, Lanarkshire. He is now a dry goods manufacturers agent [9]

James is living at 3 Cobden Place, Mt Florida, Glasgow on 10 February 1904 when he is granted probate to his sister Marion's estate [10]

James' wife Christina died in 1910 [11]

James died at 3 Cobden Place Mt Florida, Glasgow on 16 January 1911. Executors of his estate of £2950 0s 7d were sons David and James Alexander. [12] [13] [14]
