Biography

Thomas Black was born in Scotland.

Thomas was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on 10 August 1832 and baptised there on 2 September 1832 . He was the youngest of eight children of David Black and Ann Scott. ^[1]

His mother died before Thomas's ninth birthday. At the 1841 census Robert is living at Cadzow St, Hamilton with father (Baker & Grocer) and 5 siblings. ^[2] At the 1851 census Thomas is a shopman living with his father and 2 siblings at 11 Campbell St, Hamilton. ^[3] In 1861 Henry is an Accounts Clerk living at Myrtle Cottage, Govan with his brother James and sister Marion. They have a 9 year old servant. ^[4]

Thomas married Janet Thom, a 28 year old dressmaker, daughter of Robert Thom, Merchant and Mary Montgomery on 6 August 1862. The wedding was held at 17 Castlehill St, Rothesay, Isle of Bute (the Thom's home). Thomas is described as a cashier resident at 42 Gloucester St, Govan, Glasgow. ^[5] There was a son David John Black born on 10 Jun 1863 at Tradeston, Glasgow.

By 1871 the family are living at Rosebank Railway, Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. ^[6] This was a railway that crossed the River Clyde linking the Clyde Iron Works to the railway at Cambuslang using a wooden bridge. By the 1881 census Thomas is an accountant living at "Violetts" Central Avenue, Cambuslang ^[7]. As well as Thomas's wife and son living in the house are 2 boarders and a servant. Maggie Osborne a farmer's daughter from Cathkin is visiting.

Thomas died at 11am on 13 February 1889 at "Violet Bank" Central Avenue, Cambuslang of cardiac disease aged 56. ^{[8] [9]} The probate record shows his address as "Violet Bank", Cambuslang and his occupation as accountant and house agent, On 29 March his widow Jane as granted probate on the estate of £558 0s 8d. ^[10]
