Biography

Mary Blackwelder was born about 1750 in Virginia to Johann (John) Adam Blackwelder and Catherine Catron.

She married John Shaver in 1769 in Mecklenburg, North Carolina.

Children: Peter, Leah, Elizabeth L, John Wesley, Rachel, Daniel, Elizabeth Michael, Charles Joseph, Easter, Jacob Blackwelder.

She died in 1830 in the United States.

"Mary Blackwelder, a daughter of John Adam Blackwelder and his wife Catherine (maiden surname unknown). Mary's family name, Blackwelder, was anglicized from Schwarzwalder after her father's immigration to America from Germany. John Adam Blackwelder arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from Germany on 14 Sep 1738 aboard the ship Friendship.

He was born in Durrn, Schwarzwald (Black Forest), Germany in 1715. The Schwarzwalder ancestry has been traced back to John Adam Blackwelder's great-great-grandfather Jacob Schwarzwalder, who died in 1646.

Along the road to Mount Pleasant: Mary's father received a grant of 156 acres in 1762 on "little Coldwater and waters of Rocky or Johnstons River", which he sold to Mary's brother Charles Blackwelder on 26 Sep 1794. This is where Mary lived at the time of her marriage to John Shaver. On 2 Nov 1784, John Shaver received a grant of 150 acres of land along Cold Water Creek from the state of NC." [1]

I believe this Rachel is Mary's daughter! Shaver-1387 I tried to add Mary as her mother but I believe you have to do it! (Fairly new to the site, still learning about protected projects! :) )

Hi! I think that the place of birth needs to be changed to either Virginia or North Carolina (I'm leaning toward Virginia).
  • Mark B. Arslan, "Shaver Genealogy - John Shaver & Mary Blackwelder..." makes two statements about Mary's parents, the second saying "Mary (Blackwelder) Shaver was believed to be a daughter of John Adam Blackwelder, who came to America in 1738 with his family." The first drops the qualifier: "Around 1769, John Shaver married Mary Blackwelder, a daughter of John Adam Blackwelder and his wife Catherine (maiden surname unknown)." This source also notes that "[m]ost of John and Mary's children raised their families in Tennessee and Arkansas". Another webpage by the same author (Blackwelder/Schwarzwalder Genealogy) states that John Adam Blackwelder "married Catherine ----- (probably in Virginia in the 1740s)".
  • Deward Charles Williams, Sr., compiler, The Blackwelder and allied families from Cabarrus to the land of the Illini (1947) says on page 103 image #127 that Mary was "doubtless born in that part of Lunenburg County Virginia which is now Mecklinburg, about the year 1750." That page also says her father was probably "(5)", which would be the John Adam Blackwelder (see pages 5-6, #21-22), which says he "came to America with his father, John, Sept. 20, 1738. His whereabouts from his arrival in 1738 until June 24, 1762 are unknown." (The date is for a patent that places him on Little Cold Water Creek, Anson County, NC.)

See Acknowledgements for Mark B. Arslan's site, which is most impressive.
