Biography

Dr. Hubert B. Blaydes, a medical doctor in private practice in LaGrange, Kentucky, was born in March of 1878. Though a seemingly simple enough surname and given name, among the challenges of tracing his life has been the frequent inaccuracy in recording of one or both of them. Examples? In the Federal Census documents and indexes alone we find: Bloydes, Blaydes, Blades, Blagdes, Bayder - not all of which turn up using Soundex or Phonetic search techniques. Hubert's father, George W. Blaydes was also a medical practicing doctor in Kentucky. (See his profile for information.)

The 1910 Census finds Hubert married and a father to one son, living in LaGrange, Oldham County, Kentucky. The quality of the microfilmed document is poor enough that his occupation could be either 'Rector' or 'Doctor', as the first two letters are quite illegible.

Fortunately, the 1930 Census filmed image, (which finds the Blaydes yet residing in LaGrange, KY), is more legible and solves the question about Hubert's occupation - he is a doctor ("Physian" on the enumeration, but we get the meaning). The enumerator must have been exhausted that day, leaving the "l" out of 'Blaydes' and the 's' looking like an 'r'. She did manage to return the 'l' for Hubert's 83 year-old mother, "Annie E Blayder".

Also we learn from the 1930 Census that Huberts's 83 year-old mother and Susan's 73 year-old mother are both widowed and living with the younger Blaydes couple. Sainthood cannot be overlooked in this instance.
