Susannah was born in 1842. She was the daughter of Matthew Blood and Marianne Blood. She passed away in 1906.[1]
Obituary - 12 Jan 1906 - THE LATE MISS BLOOD. Miss Susan Smyth-Blood, who died of heat apoplexy early on the morning of Monday last, was the third daughter of the late Dr. M. H. Smyth-Blood, and was well known to all the old residents of Kapunda and, indeed, of South Australia, by whom she was held in great respect and esteem. Miss Blood had been an invalid for many years, and confined to her bed or couch by rheumatism, but her old friends have a vivid recollection of her strong personality and unbounded energy and kindness before she was laid aside by disease. It was a proof of her indomitable spirit that to the last, crippled as she was, she preferred living alone in the old home of her parents, and managing her own house-hold, to living with any of her relatives. Miss Blood was completely prostrated by the heat of last week, and on Sunday last became unconscious, and passed away early on Monday, despite the efforts of Dr. E. McM. Glynn and several of the hospital nurses and the loving care of her sister, Mrs. Salter (who had been with her for the last month), and many of her old friends. By Miss Blood's death Kapunda loses the last link with one of its oldest and most respected pioneers. The late Dr. Blood landed in South Australia on February 9, 1848. In the following August he settled in Kapunda with his wife and large family, and began his medical practice. Many of our middle-aged "old residents" of the town and district were ushered into the world under his auspices. The doctor lived for many years in a house near the Mine Square, where a hay field is now the site. The present home has belonged to the family since 1865. Dr. Blood died in 1883, and Mrs. Blood in 1901. The doctor was the first mayor of Kapunda, and was in office three years, during which time the Duke of Edinburgh made his famous visit. Mrs. E. Christophers, of Kapunda, was Dr. Blood's first patient, and by a strange coincidence, also his last. Of all his large family, two daughters (Mesdames Salter and Galloway) are the only survivors, but the grand children and great-grandchildren are scattered all over the Commonwealth. We understand the old home is to be sold, and for the first time in 58 years there will be no member of the old Doctor's family in our midst. The funeral was conducted on Tuesday morning by the Rev. A. G. Fry (of whose congregation Miss Blood was a member). The body was interred in the Clare-road Cemetery.[2]
