Charles Bly's mother died when he was still an infant, then his father was away for the next four years, serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. In the meantime he was taken in by his mother's parents, Henry and Rebecca (Dellinger) Wetzel, who live along the Back Road in northern Shenandoah County, near the Saint Stephens Church. When his father returned and married again, Charles stayed with his grandparents and remained with them until he was of age.[1] Charles was a farmer, who eventually had a farm near Oranda in northern Shenandoah County.[2] He and his wife were members of the Saint Stephens Lutheran Church and their children were baptized there. [3] In his last years, he and Eva lived with his youngest son, Raymond, in Middletown, Frederick County, Virginia, where he died.[4]
