Biography

Joseph Bolen was born May 22, 1843, the son of Alexander and Lydia (Fout) Bolen.

This is where Joseph Bolen was probably born. (a picture)

This house was probably on this land which on August 8, 1837, Alexander Bolan (sic) purchased 39.15 acres from the federal government. The land patent was for land in Lawrence County, Ohio, being NESW, Section 33, Township 4-N (TB I think this is Decatur Township), Range 18-W, in the Ohio River Survey.

Joseph Bolen married Mary A. Rea on February 23, 1867, in Union County, Ohio. Marriage performed by John W. Rea J.P. (perhaps her father).

Before her marriage Mollie Rea was a teacher of Sub-District No. 6, Washington Township, Union County, Ohio, for the term commencing December 24th, 1866 and ending February 14, 1867. She had 19 males and 15 females. I (Todd Bolen) had a sheet called "Teacher's Report to the Township Clerk". I sent the sheet to the Union County, Ohio, Historical Society. (58)

Joseph and Mary A. (Rea) Bolen had the following children:

  1. Ernest O. Bolen (1868-1911) m Olive Osborn--no known children
  2. Eddie "Rea" Bolen (1869-1949) m Ettie Estella "Stella" Piper. Eddie Rea Bolen (1869-1949) is buried at the Culver Masonic Cemetery, Culver, Indiana. (37) Mrs. Rea Bolen (probably Estalla (Piper) Bolen) had a 100th birthday biography. (37)
  3. Alonzo Carlton Bolen (1872-1937) m Lela Fay Cox
  4. Izora A. Bolen (1876-1915) m Thomas C. Morrow
  5. Lyman Perry Bolen (1882-1956) m Grace Batson. Lyman P. Bolen (1882-1956) is buried at the Culver Masonic Cemetery, Culver, Indiana. (37)
  6. Russell Alger Bolen (1890-1961) m 1/w Hazel F. Compton, 2/w Mrs. Hazel Trittipo. In an article in the "Democrat" (probably Culver, Indiana) November 6, 1913, Russel A. Bolen married Hazel Compton. (37)

Joseph Bolen served in the 13th and 14th Ohio Battery during the Civil War with his cousin Harrison Bolen, the son of Nelson Bolen. (47) This is his service certificate:

See Source 73 for the list of Civil War locations/battles. (73)

Joseph Bolen and his wife Mary, and family were in the 1870 Census of Bahalia, Washington Township, Union County, Ohio. His father Alexander Bolen and her parents John W. Rea were all next to one another.

8th January 1878 (Logan County, Ohio, Deed Book 56 page 312-313) Alexander Bolen and his wife Mary Bolen sells to Joseph Bolen, of Stark County, Indiana, part of his farm for $1,280, with the right to buy it back for $600 and 8% interest. Alexander Bolen reserves the use of the land for the term of ten years or during his lifetime. Alexander Bolen is to pay all taxes on said premises as long as he may have the use of said land. Land is 30 acres in No. 3323 of Virginia Military District, and his part of land conveyed to Alexander Bolen and Mary Bolen by Rebecca Pugh. (55) 11th May 1881 (Logan County, Ohio, Deed Book 61-page 329) Alexander Bolen and his wife Mary Bolen buy back the land for $740 from Joseph Bolen and his wife Mary Bolen. (55)
