Alexander Zell Bolen
Alexander Z. Bolen was born September 23, 1815, in what is now Lawrence County, Ohio. Lawrence County was formed from Gallia County in 1816. Alexander Z. Bolen was the son of Henry and Margaret (McCrary) Bolen.
Alexander Bolen was born in Kentucky (sic, all other census say Ohio) according to this entry: Alexander Bolen, Age 55, born Kentucky, and family were in the 1870 Census of Bahalia, Washington Township, Union County, Ohio.
First Marriage--1837-- Lydia Fout
Alexander Bolen married May 18, 1837 in Scioto County, Ohio, Lydia Fout (sister of William Fout who married Sally Bolen, Alexander Bolen's sister). (30)
Alexander and Lydia (Fout) Bolen's children were:
August 8, 1837, Alexander Bolan (sic) purchased 39.15 acres from the federal government. The land patent was for land in Lawrence County, Ohio, being NESW, Section 33, Township 4-N (I think this is Washington Township), Range 18-W, in the Ohio River Survey. The other patentees in that Section were Williams Rawlins, Lewis Thompson, Joseph Thompson, and James Murfin. In 1847 the family may have been in Adams County, Ohio. Son, Eli Bolen, was born October 17, 1847 in Adams County, Ohio. The 1850 Census, Perry Township, Logan County, Ohio, has Alexander Bolen (age 35) and his family on a farm (property valued at $300). Next door is his father Henry Bolen (age 63, born Kentucky) as the head of a household with only his wife Margaret (age 61) in the household. Also nearby is Nelson Bolen (age 40). (Brother of Alexander and son of Henry) (3) In 1852 Alexander Bolen moved with his family to Union County, Ohio. Daughter, Sarah Ellen Bolen, was born November 15, 1854 or 1855 in Logan County, Ohio. 12th June 1856, Alex Bolen and Henry Bolen paid $13.87 for back taxes, 266 3/4 acres in Virginia Survey 9915, on the waters of Bokes Creek in the name of Tibbs and Vanderwall original quantity 1000 acres, Union County, Ohio,. (Vol. 20, page 222). I think this land somehow belonged to James Taylor and Hanson Penn. Lots of cases involving James Taylor's estate. Later there was a sale for $1.00 to Taylor's estate. William Bird had land in the same survey and he paid James Taylor's estate $800 for land he probably already lived on. I think Henry and Alex Bolen just gave theirs back. In November Alexander Bolen bought some land from Hanson Penn's estate.
Hugh Fout bought 61 acres in Union County Ohio, from the James Taylor's estate, later he sold to Mary Bolen (Alex Bolen's wife??) I never did find the sale of that land. But Hanson Penn claim is mentioned in some of these transactions. This was the only Penn case but lots in other areas of Union County involving Taylor's estate. June 11, 1856, Alexander Bolen and his father Henry Bolen bought in a tax sale from the Auditor of Union County, Ohio, 226 3/4 acres part of Virginia Military District #9915 (original quantity of 1,000 acres in the name of Tibbs and Vanderwall), waters of Bokes Creek.. They paid $13.87. 12th June 1856, Alex Bolen and Henry Bolen paid $13.87 for back taxes, 266 3/4 acres in Virginia Survey 9915, on the waters of Bokes Creek in the name of Tibbs and Vanderwall original quantity 1000 acres, Union County, Ohio,. (Lois Stange) Daughter, Almina Bolen, was born February 26, 1858 in Union County, Ohio. In 1860 they lived in Washington Township, Union County, Ohio. I can not find them in the 1860 Census in Heritage Quest. Lydia Fout Bolen died March 26, 1861, probably in Byhalia, Union County, Ohio. Where she was buried is unknown. Perhaps at the Byhalia Cemetery or perhaps it was the East Liberty Cemetery, 1/4 mile northwest of East Liberty, Perry Township, Logan County, Ohio. Her husband Alexander Bolen was buried in that cemetery many year later in 1901. On June 20, 1861 Alexander Bolen and his father Henry Bolen quit claim deed 88 acres in Virginia Military District 9915 for $1 to the estate of James Taylor of Campbell County, Kentucky. (Vol. 24 page 568, Union County, Ohio). Henry and Alexander Bolen are shown as residing in Union County, Ohio. The 88 acres were directly north of land owned by Henry and Alexander Bolen.
Second Marriage--1861-- Mary Pugh
On December 11, 1861, Alexander Bolen married Mary Pugh, born 1816. Mary was known as mother Mary and she never had any children of her own, but was truly a wonderful mother to her step-children (5) Alexander Bolen's father, Henry Bolen died July 17, 1864, in Union County, Ohio. They owned land together which had to be settled. What follows are quitclaim deeds of Union County, Ohio after Henry Bolen's death for land purchased earlier by Henry Bolen and Alexander Bolen. On February 3, 1865 John Bolen (Alexander's brother, child #7) and his wife Elizabeth of Jackson County, Ohio, quitclaim deeded for $25 to Joseph Bolen (probably son of Alexander Bolen) 1/18 interest in about 78 acres in Union County, Ohio. The southeast corner of the property was also the southeast corner of Virginia Military District 9915. This could be in settlement of Henry Bolen's estate, as follows: 1/2 land Henry's, 1/2 land Alexander's. Then Henry's 1/2 divided 9 ways = 1/18 interest in land. One of Henry's 10 children was dead and without heirs in 1864 and that was probably Joseph Bolen. On February 11, 1865 James and Margaret (Bolen) Thompson (Alexander's sister, child #8) of Lawrence County, Ohio, quitclaim deeded for $30 to her brother Alexander Bolen the same 78 acres in Union County, Ohio, Virginia Military District 9915. On November 26, 1866 Nelson Bolen (Alexander's brother, child #1) and his wife Drusilla of Clay County, Illinois, quitclaim deeded for $25 to his brother Alexander Bolen the same 78 acres in Union County, Ohio, Virginia Military District 9915.
Possible Henry Bolen heirs and how land title would have to be cleared:
William Fout (brother of Lydia Fout, Alexander Bolen's first wife) bought 61.5 acres in Virginia Military District 9915 in Union County, Ohio, 4 June 1863, from the estate of James Taylor, of Campbell, Kentucky. On 18 Aug 1865 William Fout sold the same land to Mary Bolen (Mary Bolen was probably Alexander Bolen's second wife. This acreage, Mary (wife) and Alexander Bolen sold later, December 21, 1873, in Union County to Cyrus Wickersham. Witness Minnie Bolen. Need to look at Alexander land, some in Mary's name not sure why.). (Fout Source # 55)
Alexander Bolen, Age 55, born Kentucky (sic, no Ohio), and family were in the 1870 Census of Bahalia, Washington Township, Union County, Ohio.
November 30, 1870, Alexander Bolen buys from the executors of the estate of Hanson L. Penn (of Brown County, Ohio), 78 acres in Virginia Military Survey 9915, for $489. (Vol. 35, page 76, Union County, Ohio).
April 2, 1873, Alexander Bolen and Mary Bolen of Logan County, Ohio, sell to Ishamel C. Armintrout and Lictna Armintrout two parcels of land (78 acres, 30 poles; and 61 1/2 acres) totaling 139 3/4 acres in Union County, Ohio, in Virginia Survey 9915, for $4412. (Union County Vol. 38, page 244) Received June 23, 1873, Recorded July 2, 1873;
8th January 1878 (Logan County, Ohio, Deed Book 56 page 312-313) Alexander Bolen and his wife Mary Bolen sell to son Joseph Bolen, of Stark County, Indiana, part of his farm for $1,280, with the right to buy it back for $600 and 8% interest. Alexander Bolen reserves the use of the land for the term of ten years or during his lifetime. Alexander Bolen is to pay all taxes on said premises as long as he may have the use of said land. Land is 30 acres in No. 3323 of Virginia Military District, east end of the farm owned and occupanied by Alexander Bolen and Mary Bolen, being the said land conveyed to Alexander Bolen and Mary (Pugh) Bolen by Rebecca Pugh. (55) (They later did buy the land back, see 1881 entry below)
The 1878-9 Directory for Logan County, Ohio, has Alex Bolen in Rushcreek Township.
In the 1880 Census Alexander Bolen (age 64 (?)), with wife Mary (age 73) was in Rushcreek Township, Logan County, Ohio, page 32, dwelling 225, family 226. Also in the household was Alex Gerflinger (sic, should be Durflinger), age 20, grandson, and Josephine Leeth, age 2, (granddaughter). On the same page, dwelling 226 is son William Bolen and dwelling 227 is son Washington Bolen. (33) [1]
11th May 1881 (Logan County, Ohio, Deed Book 61-page 329-330) Alexander Bolen buys back the land (see above 8 Jan 1878 land entry) for $740 from son Joseph Bolen and his wife Mary A. Bolen. (55)
In 1883 Alexander Bolen lived in Bellefontaine, Logan County, Ohio.
Alexander and Mary Bolen purchased 42 acres for $1,000 in Washington Township, Starke County, Indiana on April 13, 1886. They purchased the land from son Joseph Bolen and his wife. The land was in section 30. Forty (40) acres being the SE 1/4 of the SW 1/4 and two (2) acres being part of SW 1/4 of the SE 1/4. This information is from the Grantor/Grantee index of Starke County. The deed is reported to be in Deed Book 29, page 205. Up through 1900 I could not find Alexander selling this land. Perhaps it was sold after his death in 1901.
Mary (Pugh) Bolen died in 1886. Mary Pugh Bolen's tombstone is in Knox (East Crown Hill Cemetery, 32 yards north of the southern East/West Road, 5 yards (1st row) west of eastern North/South road, seen 25 June 1989), Starke County, Indiana, and the dates on the tombstone are 1816-1886. Starke County Probate Book #2, page 252 or page 411 shows Alexander Bolen administrator for the estate of Mary Bolen.

I dug out the picture I have of Grandpa (Alexander) Bolen with a woman (probably his wife). The picture I have is original and not a copy. On the back in pencil is written: (exactly as written)
Grandpa Bolen of Lon. Ernest, Rea, Izora, Lyman and Russel
It's his second wife.
Sooo--it was his second wife (not his third) who died in 1886. She was not their "grandma". Alexander was born in 1815 so the picture was him age 71 or younger.

Third Marriage--1888--Mrs. Anna Elizabeth (Weatherby) Sharp
In Logan County, Ohio, on April 22, 1888, Alexander Bolen married for a third time to Mrs. Anna Elizabeth (Weatherby) Sharp. (27)(56) One newspaper notice of their marriage said that Alexander Bolen was from Marion, Indiana. I have always wondered why Alexander Bolen's marriage listed Marion, Indiana as home. Marion would be near where some of the Hobbles settled but I think most were gone at the time. Mary Pugh Bolen died 1886 in Indiana and I think Alexander and Mary may have been living in Indiana (thought Starke County) at the time of her death. I think they had sold their land in Ohio prior to her death, so Alexander could have been from Indiana and gone back to Ohio to visit when he married Anna Sharp. (36) Anna Elizabeth Weatherby was born October 3, 1817 and died March 3, 1903. Her first husband was Job Sharp. A William Weatherby had land next to Henry Bolen Sr. in 1850. In 1855 Henry Bolen, Sr. sold some land to William Weatherby. "April 29, 1897, Aged Mr. and Mrs. Alex Bolen, of East Liberty, celebrated their wedding anniversary last week. They received many fine presents. They are 84 and 82 years of age respectively." (32)
1900 United States Federal Census [2]
In the 1900 U.S. Census Alexander Z. Bolen (age 84, born Sept 1815), with wife Anna E. (age 82, born Oct 1817), was in Perry Township, Logan County, Ohio, enumeration district 119, house 92, sheet 4, line 38, married 12 years, retire farmer. His daughter Elizabeth Williams lived one household away and his son Eli Bolen lived two households away. (34) [2]
Alexander Bolen died September 20, 1901 in Logan County, Ohio. Alexander Bolen is buried in the East Liberty Cemetery, East Liberty, Perry Township, Logan County, Ohio. Alexander's 3rd wife is buried as Anna Sharp just east of Alexander Bolen's stone. She died March 3, 1903.
