Biography

Hershal Borders has Appalachian roots, in Kentucky.

Hershal Borders was born on 1 March 1922 at Middletown, Butler county, Ohio, United States. He was the son of Roy Emzy Borders and Sarah (Bowlin) Borders.

In the 1930 census Hershal (age 8) and sister Marie (age 10) were in the home of their parents, Emzy R Borders (age 32) and Sarah Borders (age 32) at Lemon, Butler, Ohio, United States.[1]

In the 1940 census Herschal (age 18) and siblings Marie (age 19) & Mabel (age 9) were in the home of their parents, Emzy R Borders (age 42) and Sarah Borders (age 42) at Lemon Township, Butler, Ohio, United States.[2]

Hershal attended Monroe High School, Butler county, Ohio. His junior year photo is seen in the 1939 yearbook.[3] Beside Hershal in the photo is Wilbur Borders. Wilbur and Hershal's father Emzy were half brothers. Hershal and Wilbur were accomplished at track and field. Their specialty was the 1/2 mile and the mile relay. Two 1939 yearbook clippings provide some insight.[4][5]

Hershal married Bernice Underwood on 22 Dec 1941 at Bellvue, Campbell county, Kentucky. The marriage license was obtained at Newport, Campbell, Kentucky. [6] It is uncertain how long they were married. They have a daughter who is still living.

Hershal enlisted in the US Coast Guard Merchant Marines during World War II, serving for 2-1/2 years as an electrician aboard ships that were likely used for transporting crude oil from the oil-rich areas around Aruba and Venezuela to Standard Oil of New Jersey refineries. This was in support of the US Military efforts in WWII. Details of his many overseas excursions are seen in records of Ellis Island and other New York Passenger Lists. He made excursions to Trinidad, Aruba, and multiple round trips to Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela. Some excursion destinations were Classified (sealed). A summary of travels is shown below:

  • Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela to New York aboard the SS Esso New Haven, departure 9 Sep 1945 arriving NY on 14 Sep 1945. He was listed as 23 yrs old, 5 ft 5 inches tall, 165 pounds.[15]

After discharge from the Coast Guard, Hershal returned to Middletown, Ohio. He served 4 years in the Naval Reserves and married Patricia Lee Thompson on 2 July 1948 at Middletown. The source for the marriage date and location is from a MyHeritage/FamilySearch Tree created by family members.[23] Hershal & Patricia had two children together. They are still living in 2021.

Hershal worked at Armco Steel company as an electrician, teaching trade classes for many years. He passed away (age 93) on 8 Mar 2015 at Butler county, Ohio. He was buried at Woodside Cemetery, Middletown, Butler county, Ohio.[24]

Patricia passed away (age 91) on 19 Dec 2019 at Middletown. She was buried beside Hershal at Woodside Cemetery.[25]
