This Crossley Bottomley should not be confused with the Crossley Bottomley born on the 19th August 1845, birth registered at Todmorden, son of John Bottomley and Hannah Crossley; married to Betty Speak in 1869 (registered at Halifax, Yorkshire). The 1845 Crossley can be tracked to his death (registered at Halifax) in 1882.
Crossley Bottomley was born in December 1850, or January 1851, in Walsden, Lancashire, England, the second known child, second son of Robert Bottomley and Better Sager, with his birth being registered in the 1st Quarter of 1851 at Todmorden.[1]
On the 30th March 1851, the Bottomley family was living on Top of Close, Walsden. Those home at the time were Robert (30), a railway labourer; his wife: Betty (27), and their sons: 1-year-old John; and 3-month-old Crossley.[2]
Crossley married Ann Cousen in 1870, with the marriage being registered in the 3rd Quarter at Rochdale, Lancashire, [3] going on to have one child, a daughter they named Emma Cousen.
On the 2nd April 1871, Crossley, a 20-year-old clerk, was living with his wife: Ann (20), and their 1-month-old daughter: Emma, on Victoria Street, Littleborough, Lancashire.[4]
Crossley Bottomley - Police Gazette notice. |
In February 1872 Crossley had a warrant taken out for his arrest on the charges of embezzlement, and absconding.[5] His description at this time was given as being 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers or moustache; followed by a description of the clothing he was wearing when last seen. All could be changed, as he could grow whiskers, and/or a moustache, he could put lifts in his shoes, his clothing, I'm sure, was discarded for something new as soon as he could safely do so. About the only thing he could not easily change in his day was the colour of his eyes, which was not given with the rest of his description.
It seems he disappears from records at this time, other than his being mentioned as the father of the bride in 1902, when Emma married William Alfred Parkinson.[6]
(At least, none have been found that definitively point to him.)
Considerable time and effort was used looking for any record for this particular Crossley Bottomley, with zero results. That's not to say such does not exist, just that this researcher was unable to definitely tie any post 1872 record to this Crossley Bottomley. Paul-5413 06:30, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
I made the decision to mark the end-date of the marriage as the year he was known to have absconded from justice, presumably going on the run from the law, quite possibly under an alias. No record has been found to say that his wife, Ann, had him declared deceased, or that there was a divorcement granted her. Paul-5413 06:30, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
Both the name Crossley, and the name Bottomley were well known in England. It also appears many members of the Bottomley family married into the Crossley family, and vice versa. (Example: The marriage of a Samuel Bottomley to a Dorothy Crossley was recorded at Elland in Yorkshire on the 15th February 1601; as well as the parents of the Crossley Bottomley mentioned at the top of this biography.)
