Emma Cousen Bottomley was born in March 1871, in Littleborough, Lancashire, England, the only known child of Crossley Bottomley and Ann Cousen, her birth being registered in the 1st Quarter at Rochdale,[1] and baptised on the 9th April the same year, in the Church of Littleborough, Parish of Rochdale. C H Felding, Curate of Littleborough officiated.[2]
On the 2nd April 1871, 1-month-old Emma was living on Victoria Street, Littleborough, Lancashire with her father: Crossley, a 20-year-old clerk; and her mother: Ann (20).[3] Soon after this, her father "did a bunk", with an alert to "be on the lookout for" issued from Bow Street. It is unknown if Emma ever saw him again.
On the 3rd April 1881, the now 10-year-old Emma, a scholar, was staying with her maternal grandparents on Common Lane, Waddingham, Lincolnshire. Those home at the time were her grandfather: John Cousen (69), a farm labourer; her grandmother: Sarah (63), farm labourer's wife; and her Cousen uncles: Timothy (32), a farm labourer; Frederick (26), a miller; and Richard (21), a labourer.[4]
On the 5th April 1891, Emma (20) was living at 5 Coach Terrace, Gorton, Manchester, with her family. Also home at the time were her widowed mother: Annie (40); her half-siblings: Helena Edwards (12), and (Frederick) Joshua Edwards (9); her step-brothers: Charles Edwards (35), a general labourer; and Thomas Edwards (30), a joiner; and Staffordshire-born George Walker (21), a locomotive fireman.[5] Her other half-sister, Elizabeth, was staying with an aunt.
On the 31st March 1901, Emma (29), was working as a housemaid in the employ of George Highfield Leigh (50), Gentleman, in Moorfield House, Moorside Road, Moorside Swinton, Lancashire. Others resident at the time were George's children: Constance Mary Leigh (16); Bernard Henry Leigh (13); and Ellinor Highfield Leigh (12); George's sister: Lydia Sarah Leigh (48), living on own means; and the rest of the household staff: Ashton in Mersey, Cheshire-born Emily Wright (36), mistress domestic; Wolverhampton, Staffordshire-born Clara Davee (41), cook; Burton, Lancashire-born Mary Ellen Goodwin (18), assistant housemaid; and Eccles, Lancashire-born Mary E Roberts (16), assistant cook.[6]
After the Banns had been published the requisite number of times, including in the groom's home parish in West Kirby, Chester,[7] Emma Cousen Bottomley (30) and William Alfred Parkinson (28), a postman, were married on the 18th June 1902, in St James, Gorton, Lancashire, by the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church. Alfred M Stephens officiated, and their witnesses were Albert Lomas, and Emma's half-sister: Lena Edwards.[8] Emma's father is noted as Crossley Bottomley, a clerk; and William's father as William Riley Parkinson, (deceased), an engine driver.
Over the next few years Emma and William were to have three known children, all daughters: Edna Beryl, baptised in March 1904,[9] and, sadly, deceased not long afterwards; Audrey, baptised in June 1905[10], and Lorna, baptised in February 1908.[11]
On the 2nd April 1911, Emma (38) was living with her family at 11 Murray Grove, West Kirby, Cheshire. Those home at the time were her husband: William (36), a postman with the GPO; and their daughters: 5-year-old Audrey, and 3-year-old Lorna.[12]
Emma Cousen Parkinson née Bottomley passed away in 1962, aged 91 years, her death being registered in the 3rd Quarter at Wallasey, Cheshire, England.[13]
