Peter K. Bowes was born in Lanorick county, Ontario, Jan. 1, 1843. Mr. Bowes was one of the early settlers of Wabaunsee county, coming to Kansas in 1865 as a bridge carpenter for the Union Pacific railroad, which was being built through Wamego at that time. After a few years he gave up on the carpenter’s trade and located on a farm just south of Wamego, where he lived until about eight years ago; since which time he lived in Alma.

He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Mary White, of Wabaunsee in 1872, and Miss Frances Shunkwiler[sic] of Wamego in 1884. He was the father of eleven children, nine of whom survived him; four sons and five daughters, also two grandchildren and two brothers. The brothers are living in Chatham, Ont., and the children are Wm. Bowes, of Alma, Kansas, Peter Bowes, of Fort Worth, Texas, Earl and Raymond Bowes of Topeka, Miss Mae Bowes, of Great Falls, Mont., Mrs. W. J. Eaton and Miss Fannie Bowes of Wamego; Miss Ruth Bowes, of Wheaton, Kansas; Mrs. Alice Rimer, of Wichita, Kansas.

He united with the Congregational church at Wabaunsee in his early manhood and afterwards with the Presbyterian church at Wamego.

About seven months ago he became hopelessly ill and was placed under medical care in a hospital at Wichita, Kansas, where he departed this life Nov. 20, 1915, aged 72 years, 10 months and 20 days.

The funeral services were held in the Congregational church at Wabaunsee Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. Phillips of Wamego and Rev. Albin of Alma and interment was made in the Wabaunsee cemetery.
