"Robert Smith, eldest son and heir of Capt. Charles Smith and wife Dorothy, was born ca 1701 in Essex County, Virginia. He died about 1744 in St.Mary's Parish in Caroline County; he married Elizabeth ??? who died before May 12, 1749.
Robert Smith, surveyor, was called Captain Robert when he was fined for not keeping his road in repair. Nov. 12, 1734. When he died, he named his first cousin, Capt. Richard Taliafero as executor of his will and directed him to lay off sixty acres of his plantation as a site for a town, to be called Port Royal; the lots to be sold in order to redeem the plantation and lands mortgaged.
