Sarah was born on 20 March 1846 in Rockingham County, Virginia, the eighth of twelve children and the fifth of six daughters of Daniel Bowman and Sallie Miller.
At an unknown date and place she married David Shank and they had three children.
On June 26, 1879, when she was thirty-three, she died of heart disease in Saint Martins, Cole County, Missouri and is buried in the Mount Zion Mennonite Cemetery, in Versailles, Morgan County, Missouri.
1860 census
Dan[ie]l Bowman appears in the 1860 United States Federal Census as a 46-year-old farmer with $20,000 in real and $6000 in personal property, living with his wife, Sally, and ten children, five sons and five daughters. A 39-year-old white female and a 28-year-old white male farm laborer with $800 in personal property also live with them. (Note; the real property value is transcribed as $30,000, but I believe the amount entered was actually $20,000. (Patricia Prickett Hickin 7 May 2018). All the older children had attended school. Everyone is shown as literate.
