Biography

Charles Bowtell

Although a baptism has not yet been found for Charles, he received a bequest in the will of his father, Charles Bowtell in 1765 [1] Charles received £55, a cottage and ten acres of copyhold lands in this will. We can surmise that Charles is the son of Charles and Rebecca Bowtell, as at his burial, though an adult, the vicar at the time had the habit of writing parents names even on adult burials. [2]
He married Ann Bright at St Botlophe, Bishopsgate, London on 8 Feb 1785.[3][4] Charles is stated as "of Lindsell in the county of Essex" in the register. Joseph Bright, Ann's father was one of the witnesses. The couple had at least six children, all baptised at Lindsell, Essex:
John Bowtell (Born 1785)
Elizabeth Bowtell (1787-1837)
Robert Bowtell (1789-1864) M. Mary Surry
Charles Bowtell (Born c.1789)
Joseph Bowtell (1790-1865) M. Mary Chapman
Nathaniel Bowtell (1791-1869) M. Mary Everett
He died in 1793, being buried at Lindsell, Essex on 4 Oct 1793. [5]
Charles left a will, which was written and signed 27 Sep 1793 and proved 17 Dec 1793. [6]

    • What is very interesting in this will, is that John Cornell, who is one of Charles' executors, and mentioned as a friend, is mentioned in the will of Charles Bowtell senior, who I take to be Charles jr's father. In Charles' seniors will he leavesCharles jr a copyhold cottage "now in the occupation of Thomas Bawey and John Cornell".
