Newton served with the Confederate forces during the US Civil War. He enlisted on 26 April 1862 in Holmesville, Mississippi, with Colonel P. Brent for a period of three years or until the end of the war. He was a private with Company K, 38th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry.^[3] On 30 June 1862 he was absent sick. He had been serving with Captain Williams under Colonel Adams.

Newton died on 1 July 1862 at Okalona, Mississippi. His accrued pay of $99.20 was paid to his widow Ann America Boyd.^[4] He was buried in Okolona Confederate Cemetery, Okolona, Chickasaw County, Mississippi, United States.^[5][6]
