Biography

Martha Bradley was baptized at the New Haven First Congregational Church in Oct 1648.[1][2] She was probably born, in New Haven, shortly before she was baptized. No parent was mentioned, but she was the daughter of William Bradley and Alice Prichard Bradley.[3] Her father called her daughter Munson in his 1683 will, and a 1691 agreement between heirs was signed by her husband Samuel Munson.[4]

Martha married three times:[3]

  1. 26 Oct 1665 in New Haven, Connecticut, Samuel Munson[3][5]
  2. about 1694[3] (between 2nd Monday in Jun 1694 and 18 June 1697) Eliasaph Preston. The administration of Samuel Munson's estate by 1697 was in the hands of his son John and "ye sd Martha Munson als Preston"[6] He died in 1707.[3] Eliasaph Preston calls his wife Martha in his will.[7]
  3. after 1707 Matthew Sherman according to Fam. of Ancient New Haven p. 261[3] and the Munson Record p. 81, which gives as a source a land record. When John sold Theophilus the ancestral home in 19 Feb 1722 it was bounded by land in the “occupation of my honoured Mother, Mrs. Matthew Sherman.”[6] There are no vital, colony or town records in early New Haven, for a Matthew Sherman. Families of Ancient New Haven p. 261 says Daniel Sherman married second Martha the widow of Samuel Munson and Eliasaph Preston. This is further proved by probate records.

Martha Sherman died in 1728 or early 1729. John Munson was appointed administrator of her estate 6 Jan 1728/9. An inventory of her estate was taken 8 Jan 1728/9, containing a bible, a pair of spectacles, 2 other old books and assorted household goods amounting to £62.15.8. The inventory was taken by John Munson, Caleb Hotchkiss and John Bradley[8]

Martha and Samuel had Munson Children:[3]

  1. Martha 1667
  2. Samuel 1668
  3. Thomas 1670/1
  4. John 1672
  5. Theophilus 1675
  6. Joseph 1677
  7. Stephen 1679
  8. Caleb 1682
  9. Joshua 1684
  10. Israel 1686

This merge has been rejected by the other side. Do you have more information on Martha? Do you have a source for the 1643 birth? because that's the hang up. Do you know who she married or her parents, that would also confirm. If you have no source, or other information, please communiicate then let's change the birth to 1648, and repropose. Thank you

Bradley-3351 and Bradley-76 do not represent the same person because: They may. However; more info needed on #3351.

Bradley-3351 and Bradley-76 appear to represent the same person because: There was only one Martha Bradley in early New Haven. The dates on Bradley-76 are accurate as far as we know. The birth date on Bradley-3351 simply does not exist in New Haven at the time. These are duplicates. please merge

Hi Richard, As far as the records show, there was only one Martha Bradley in early New Haven. That was the daughter of William who was bpt in 1648. NO birth records were kept in New Haven that early so this 1643 birth is a figment of someone's imagination. Please approve the proposed merge.

Reproposing merge. We know she married Munson by the vital records. We know she married Preston by the Munson probate records. Is that sufficient to prove they are the same person.?

Bradley-5888 and Bradley-76 do not represent the same person because: I'm not convinced by what I read. More info needed.

Bradley-3349 and Bradley-76 appear to represent the same person because: I think the Oct 26 birth is a mistake (that is marriage day) and that these people are the same because they have the same name and death date. A Martha Bradley was born 1663 in Massachusetts to different parents. I see Ancestry trees have one. but it is probably an error.

Bradley-3529 and Bradley-76 appear to represent the same person because: the 1665 date in the death field was marriage date. so after that
