Biography

John was born about 1649. He married Anne. Her name was either Dalrymple or Sterling. He died in 1696. He probably had no issue as no children were mentioned in his will.[1]

Please add source citations.
One merged profile had the birthplace as Calvert Co,MD and birth date as 1658. Most sources indicate that only the youngest daughter of this family was born in Maryland and even that is uncertain. Still, this is noted for completeness.
The surname is variously seen as Brasseur, Brasher, Brashear, Brashears, and Brassieur, among others. One source claims there are more than 35 variant spellings among the various descendants. The original French spelling is most frequently given as Brasseur, but even this is less than completely certain. His father's given name appears as Benois, Benoit, Bennet, and Benjamin, and there may be others. The father's birth date ranges from about 1590 to about 1630. Robert is said to be his father's father, his father's brother, and also that both his father and brother were named Robert. Nearly everyone agrees his father was born in France, but several different specific locations in France are given.
Both book and internet sources very wildly in their statements regarding nearly everything about about the family. I salute anyone who can sort out the seemingly endless conflicts and contradictions regarding this family and present credible evidence for what is fact and what is not.

Cavaliers & Pioneers lists a John Brasseiur as receiving 37 acres in Chuckatuck Parish on 24 April 1700 for transporting one person (i.e., himself). ~ Nell Marion Nugent, C&P, volume III (1695-1732), page 36.

I encountered this family while researching the sons of John Billingsley, who married Elizabeth - possibly born Corbreath (primarily their son John). Their son George left a will probated in Calvert County that called him "of Upper Norfolk Co., VA", and George and Henry were granted land in Chuckatuck Parish in 1671.

The abstract of George's will in Baldwin's Maryland calendar of wills (page 149; 157 of 292) lists John Cobreath as a legatee & "Test: Jno. Brassieur, Jno. Carter, Jas. Sumner, Henry Mills."

Not sure of how Thomas Paget of Calvert County may be connected to this family, but the abstract of his 1677 will (page 194; 202 of 292) has several familiar names:

"Overseers: Capt. John Cobreath, Capt. Bourne, Francis Billingsley, Jno. Hunt.
"Test: Robt. Brasseur, Wm. Wallace."
