Biography

Sadie was born about 1881 (see Research Notes) in Lithuania, then part of the Russian Empire. Her parents were Sam Breznik and Ida (Greek) Breznik.[1]

Sadie traveled alone from Russia to the United States, leaving from Bremen, Germany aboard the SS Weimar, and arriving in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States July 11, 1893. She traveled in steerage and listed her occupation as Gentleman's Servant. Although she was believed to be twelve years old at the time (see Notes), she reported her age as 16 (perhaps that was the minimum age a person was permitted to travel alone). Upon arrival, her name was recorded as Sore Brzeynik.[2]

In 1900 22 year old Sadie (shown as Sorah, but incorrectly transcribed as Dorah), her mother Ida (shown as Gussie, perhaps to distinguish her from her daughter-in-law, age 48), and brother Morris (age 18) all lived in the Manhattan, New York, New York, United States home of Sadie's half-brother Harris Bresnick (shown as Harry, age 26), his wife Ida (age 26), and their children Anna (shown as Annie, age 3) and Lillian (shown as Lena, age 1). Harris was a butcher, and Sadie was a cloak operator.[3]

Sadie married Sam Gordon February 2, 1904 in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States[1] and they had two children (see Research Notes).

In 1905 Sam (age 22) and Sadie (age 21) were among about two dozen boarders in the home of Abe Freedberg (age 32), his wife Beckia (age 31), and their children Chalies (age 12), Dora (age 9), Sam (age 11), and Essie (age 4) at 161 Henry Street in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States. Another boarder Joe Gordon (age 19) may have been related to Sam. Sam and Joe were tailors.[4]

After Sam's death[5] (see Notes), in 1910, 29 year old Sadie and sons Ben (incorrectly shown as Ban, age 8) and Harry (age 3) were incorrectly shown with last name Bresnick instead of Gordon. They were living in the home of Sadie's brother Morris Bresnick (age 22) in Benezette, Elk, Pennsylvania, United States. Morris was a retail clothing merchant.[6]

In 1915, 34 year old Sadie (shown as Sarch) lived on Centerville Street in Fallsburg, Sullivan, New York, United States with sons Benjamin (age 10) and Harry (age 8). Sadie did housework to support her family.[7] Sadie's brother Harris lived on the same street with his family.[8]

In 1920, 37 year old Sadie and her sons Benjamin (age 14) and Harry (age 13) lived in the Fallsburg, Sullivan, New York, United States home of a widowed doctor, Phillip Givginsky (age 39) and his children George (age 15) and Evelyn (age 13). Sadie was a hired girl who worked as a servant in the household.[9]

In 1925, 48 year old Sadie (shown as Sarah but incorrectly transcribed as Larue) lived at 26 Bay 25th Street in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States with sons Benjamin (shown as Benj, age 20) and Harry (age 19). A roomer Ethel Goldston (age 20) also lived with the family. Benjamin was a bookkeeper, Harry was a salesman, and Ethel was a saleslady.[10]

In 1930, Sadie (age 49) paid $50 per month rent for her apartment at 26 Bay 25th Street in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States. She lived there with sons Benjamin (age 25) and Harry (age 23). Benjamin was a bank clerk and Harry was a laborer who did odd jobs.[11]

Sadie's Bay 26th Home (2014 photo)

In 1940, Sadie (age 59) and her son Benjamin (age 35) had reversed roles, with Benjamin now serving as head of the household. They paid $38 per month rent for their apartment at 37 Bay 26th Street in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States. Ben was a bank teller.[12]

Sadie and Ben remained in that apartment until 1962. It was on the third floor of a "walkup" building (one with no elevator) in the Bensonhurst neighborhood. Until she was about 80 years old, Sadie took her folding metal shopping cart down the stairs every day to shop for food, then dragged the full cart all the way up the stairs.[13]

Sadie was described as "senile" by her family since before 1950 (she probably had Alzheimer's disease, which had not yet been identified).[13] This led to some lifestyle aberrations:

  • She was very uncomfortable with the idea of electricity, so every night she unplugged everything from outlets, then re-connected all the plugs the next morning. As a result, the time on her kitchen clock was totally unrelated to reality![13]
  • Sadie found the radio upsetting. She was very concerned about the poor people who she thought had been shrunk and put inside the wooden box, from which she heard them talking. Her sons never put a telephone in her apartment, fearing that she would be even more upset to recognize voices of her family and think they had been shrunk to fit inside the (even smaller) telephone receiver.[13]
  • As a religious Jew, Sadie took the prohibition against working on the Sabbath (from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset) very seriously. She lit one of the burners on her gas stove every Friday afternoon and left it on until Saturday evening, so that she would be able to cook. Somehow, in her mind, turning the burner on or off constituted work, but the act of cooking did not.[13]
  • She climbed on a ladder every year before Passover to wash the walls in case any traces of yeast were present there. When she was about 75 years old, she fell off the ladder and broke her arm. After that, the family never told her when Passover came to avoid the risk of her getting hurt again engaging in that activity. She occasionally commented that it seemed like it had been a long time since the last Passover and it must be coming again soon, but she was always told that the next Passover was still a long way off.[13]

By 1962, Sadie required more care than Ben could provide, and was moved to a nursing home. She constantly worried about her children and often said that, even though she liked the nice hotel (where she thought she was living), she had to go back home "to take care of the children". On one occasion, she evaded surveillance. Four days later, a police officer found her sitting on a curb a few blocks away from the nursing home. It was February (mid-winter in New York City) and she was wearing only a housedress, bedroom slippers, and a light sweater. She was crying because she could not find her way home and was worried that nobody was there to take care of her children. Shortly after that, she became ill (probably for the first time in her entire life) with pneumonia.[13]

When Sadie died in March 1963, her age was estimated as 100 (which would make her far older than shown in all the records found since 2015). Her family believed that she never knew her age because her birth had not been recorded. At her funeral, the main topic of discussion among relatives was arguing about how much of an underestimate the 100 was! Apparently some of them actually believed the story Sadie often told about the time she heard Abraham Lincoln speak in Union Square, a small park in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States (which would have been circa 1860 if President Lincoln ever did speak there).[13]

Research Notes

There are numerous errors in all the source records, which appear to be the result of several factors:

  • census takers, especially in that time period and in rural areas, were not especially literate.
  • Sadie, who understood English well in later years, may not have understood it very well in the earlier years. In addition, her speech was closer to broken English, with some Russian and some Yiddish mixed in. Her Russian accent may have presented an additional impediment to communication between her and the census taker. On top of that, she did not read English at all.

Birth Year and Immigration
The year of Sadie's birth varies, as shown on different records:

  • about 1877 on the 1893 ship manifest when she immigrated to the United States[2] and 1925 census[10]
  • May 1878 in 1900 census[3]
  • about 1881 in 1910 census,[6] 1915 census,[7] 1930 census,[11] and 1940 census[12]
  • about 1883 in her 1904 marriage record[1] and 1920 census[9]
  • about 1884 in 1905 census[4]

1881 is also supported by the family story of Sadie's immigration adventure:[13]

Sadie's family pooled their money to send one family member at a time to the United States, as they could accumulate the price of ship passage. Sadie left home at the age of twelve with only the clothes she was wearing and enough money to purchase her boat ticket. She somehow made her way across 600 miles of Russia and Germany to the port and boarded the ship. When she arrived, the family members who had preceded her were not there to meet her, as had been planned. She was penniless - literally - and did not speak any English - but managed to find the community of Russian Jewish immigrants on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York, New York, United States. She learned English, got a job, and at some point managed to connect with her family.

Children
Sadie's children were:

  • Benjamin Gordon, born March 8, 1905 in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States, died January 1977 in Fort Lauderdale, Broward, Florida, United States
  • Harry Gordon was born June 29, 1906 in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States, died July 9, 1997 in Fort Lauderdale, Broward, Florida, United States

Sam's Death
The discovery of the death record for Sadie's husband Sam[5] and records of Sadie's move, as a widow, from Manhattan to Pennsylvania,[6] before finally settling in Woodridge (a small village in the township of Fallsburg, Sullivan, New York, United States)[7] puts an end to the intrigue of the story she told her sons about their father. While concealing the death of a parent from very young children is understandable, Sadie continued to perpetrate this myth for the rest of her life:

Sadie, her husband, and sons lived in Woodridge until her husband disappeared one day and nothing was ever known about him after that. Alone with two toddler sons, in a time and place where there was great stigma on single parents, the community treated her as a pariah, gossiping about what she could possibly have done that was so bad that it caused her husband to abandon his family. The local doctor was the only one who took pity on her and gave her a job taking care of his office. Both sons left school after eighth grade to help support the family.[13]
