Joseph Brevard was born in Rowan County (became Iredell County in 1788), North Carolina on Jul 19, 1766. Brevard entered the Continental Army when still a boy. He was commissioned lieutenant in the 1st North Carolina Regiment, Continental Army in 1782 and served throughout the Revolutionary War.
Service Record: Was an Ensign. 8/1/1781, a Lieutenant. Transferred to 3rd NC Regiment on 2/6/1782. Then, regimental quartermaster. Served until the end of the war. [1]
He moved to Camden, South Carolina, and became sheriff of Camden District (1789–1791). He served as commissioner in equity October 14, 1791. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1792, and commenced practice in Camden. He engaged in the compilation of the law reports which bear his name 1793-1815. He served as member of South Carolina House of Representatives from 1796 to 1799.
He died in Camden, South Carolina on October 11, 1821, and was interred in the Quaker Cemetery.
