Biography

Samuel Brill was born in Frederick County, Virginia about 1811 to Henry Brill and Elizabeth Orndorff. About 1836, he married Martha Evans,[1] and they had the following children:[2][3][4]

  1. Elizabeth Ann Brill, b. 15 Sep 1837; d. 5 May 1905, WV;[5] Never married.
  2. Morgan Brill, b. abt. ; d. 3 May 1863, killed at Chancellorsville, VA during the Civil War.[6]
  3. William Paul Brill, b. 14 Apr 1841; d. 11 Apr 1903; m. 1) 13 Dec 1866, Ann Maria Spaid;[7] m. 2) 22 Dec 1870, Mary Dellinger.[8]
  4. Flavius J. Brill, b. 21 Feb 1845/1846; d. 25 Sep 1870.[9][5]
  5. John Wesley Brill, b. 10 Mar 1848; d. 7 Jun 1922;[5] m. 28 Dec 1876, Eva Ellen Cooper.[7]
  6. Thomas Benton Brill, b. 28 Apr 1850; d. 23 Jan 1910;[5] m. 28 Aug 1884, Nancy Secrist.[7]

It is possible that Martha is not the mother of Samuel's two oldest children, given she would have been just 15 years old when Elizabeth was born.

In 1850, Samuel, a farmer, Martha and six children were living in District 24, Hampshire County, Virginia.[2] By 1860 they are in Eastern Township living close to his brothers, John and Henry. [3] In 1870, the family was living in Capon Township, West Virginia (having seceded from Virginia in 1861 and accepted into the Union in 1863).[4] They were still in Capon in 1880; daughter Sarah Anderson was living next to them.[11]

Samuel made his will on 3 Dec 1883:[12]

I Samuel Brill of the County of Hampshire State of West Virginia, Considering the uncertainty of life and being of sound mind & memory do make and publish this my last will & testament herey revoking and making void all otehr former wills by me heretogore made. And, First, I direct that my bodt be decently intered and that my funeral be conducted in a manner conforming with my estate and situation inlife and as such woldly estate as it hath pleased God to entrust me with I dispose of as follows, first I direct that all my just debts & funeral expences be paid as soon as possible ofter my decease and the rest & residue of my property both real & personal, I will and bequeath to my beloved wife Martha during her natural life to enable her to support herself in a respectabel manner and I further direct and empower my beloved wife Martha to dispose of any or all of my personal property as needed as she may deem prudent, I direct and empower my wife to cut and dispose of any wood or timber of any kind off of my lands that she may deem necessary for her maintenance and support, and I further will and bequeath that after the death of my beloved wife Martha should any of my personal property be left, it and all my lands shall be divided by me Executor share & share alike between all my children equally.
-----And lastly I constitute and appoint my son Thomas B. Brill to be my sole Exeutor of this my last will and testament.
-----In testimony whereof I have ths day hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this 3rd day of December one thousand eight hundred & eighty one.

Samuel died on 10 Jul 1882,[9] and his will was proven in court on 3 Oct 1882 by oath of G. A. White and Jacob Fishel.
