Alexander Brodie was first identified as "merchant in Forres" in 1744. He was elected a member of the Burgh Council in 1745, Treasurer in 1749 , Dean of Guild Court in 1750, and Baillie from 1755 until 1761.
Alexander’s name appears in the 21 Oct 1744 and subsequent Forres Kirk Session minutes, wherein it is recorded that “Alexander Brodie servant to James Gordon, Merchant in Forres, and Janet Laing, a former servant of James Gordon, were rebuked for fornication, which took place on 25 May 1744."
Between 1768 and 1772, though no longer on council, Alexander is identified in the OPR as “Baillie Brodie in Dyke”, indicating that he relocated from Forres. Then, in the 1773 OPR as baptism witness, and two 1773 Burgh documents, Alexander is referred to as “Factor to James Brodie of Brodie”, this designation indicating that he had been retained by the Brodie Chief in an administrative or quasi-legal capacity.
Contrary to earlier assertions on this site, Alexander was not "Estate Factor" for the sale of the Brodie estates to James Duff, Earl of Fife ca 1774, rather he was Factor only for the Greishop/Greeshop property near Forres.
There existed at least nine persons bearing the name Alexander Brodie born between 1710 and 1725 within a 20 mile radius of Forres (and even more in adjacent parishes). Each has been examined in depth. There is a compelling body of evidence that he was born in Alves, 1721, the son of Thomas Brodie (d1736 in Alves) and Elizabeth Giles from Banff.
The ancestry of Thomas has not yet been established (note: the 1668 Alves baptism of a Thomas Brodie, later of Pitgaveny, is NOT this Thomas).
Furthermore Alexander is NOT descended from James Brodie of Spynie as some Wiki contributors have speculated. However, Alexander Brodie's sister, Emilia, did marry James Brodie of Spynie and his son became James Brodie 21st of Brodie, thus Alexander's nephew.
