Biography

George Brown, 5th child of Noah Brown and Lois Mills, was born 16 Feb 1794 in Amenia, New York. He married, first, Apphia Clark, daughter of Ezra Clark (sister of his brother Samuel's wife. George and Apphia had three children, Elijah, Emily and Apphia, who died as an infant.[1]

George served in the War of 1812.[2]

His first wife, Apphia died 23 Mary 1823 and he then married Hannah Hopkins 13 Sep 1826, daughter of Judge Enos.[3]

In the 1850 US Federal Census, Geo Brown is listed as age 55, living in Rochester Ward 6, Monroe, New York, USA with household member(s) Geo Brown, Hanny Brown, Julia Brown, William Brown, Eliza Brown, Cat Graham.[4]

George and Hannah had daughters Laura, Julia, Elizabeth, and sons Frederick and William. George and his wife raise their family in Rochester, New York where George and his partner ran a carpet sales business named Brown & Williams[1].

He died 18 Oct 1878 in Rochester, New York. [6]

George's obituary in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reads:[7]

Death of Colonel George Brown - The not entirely unexpected death of Colonel George Brown occurred at his residence, number 11 East street, yesterday morning, and in a short time the melancholy news was made known to his friends. The cause of his death was heart disease, and peacefully and quietly he passed away with out a struggle. Colonel Brown came from Dutchess county to Rochester in 1848, going into the carpet business on State street, the firm name being Brown & Williams. In this business he remained twenty-three years, only retiring when the advance of old age made it imperative that he should have rest. His sterling integrity and many Christian traits of character won for him the genuine respect of his business associates and friends, and by all his death will be sincerely mourned. His wife is still living but so very ill that she lay unconscious of all that is pasting around her. He leaves three daughters and one son, all residing In Rochester. The funeral will be held Monday morning at 11 o'clock.
