Biography

Stewart Brown was born on 20 Oct 1897 in Dory Mills, Algoma, Ontario, Canada. Her parents were Joseph Brown and Agnes Dunn. [1]

Note that although Stewart is typically a male name and Stewart was recorded as male on the birth registration, later records - including two marriages and births of children - show her as female.

At the age of 3, Stewart appeared in the 1901 Census of Canada in the household of her parents in Parkinson, Algoma District. [2]

George Lessor married Stewart Brown on 26 Sep 1917. George was 37 years old. His parents were George Lessor and Mary Alice Barr. Stewart was 20 years old. Her parents were Joseph Brown and Agnes Dunn. [4]

At the age of 23, Stewart appeared in the 1921 Census of Canada with her husband in Parkinson, Ontario. [5]

Their household was shown as:

All members of the family and their parents were born in Ontario, except the parents of George were born in Quebec.

According to Find-a-Grave, Stewart's husband George passed away in 1926 and then she married Russel John Hopkins in 1954.

Stuart passed away in 1963 and was buried in Maple Ridge Cemetery in Thessalon, Algoma District, Ontario.

The grave inscription said:

Research Notes

From Jill Claus:

  1. There is a slight discrepancy for her birth year. Her grave stone says she was born in 1898, but her birth registration says 1897.
  2. Her first husband's last name might be spelled incorrectly on the memorial page. It was Lessor (not Lessard) on the marriage registration and subsequent census records.
