Biography

There is no indication in Keith^[1] as to sources for assigning the children to Benjamin. However, many of the assignments can be made on the basis of deduction and some marriage records list him as the father. His was the largest Broyles household in Madison County in the early 1800's.

Benjamin's wife was named Susan, as proved by the death record of Jemima Berry of Page Co., Va., daughter of "Benjamin and Susan Broiles"^[2]

U.S. Census

7 Apr 1768 - Benjamin's birth is recorded in the Birth Register of the Hebron Lutheran Church, Culpeper County, Virginia.^[7]

11 Jan 1790 - Benjamin Bruill (Broill?) is on the tax list of Fayette Co., Ky.^[8] It isn't certain that this is him, but we note that his brother Zacharias and cousin John moved to Kentucky c. 1798.

1802 - He is taxed for two polls in Madison County, Virginia.^[9] This means that he had a 16 year old son, and it implies that Benjamin must have married at 17 or 18. This is unusually early for a man to marry.

26 May 1802 - Benjamin is named executor of his father's will but like most of his brothers was not listed as an heir, probably because he was well established at this point.^[10]

1793...1836 - Benjamin is taxed in Madison County.^[9] He is "levy free" after 1823, on account of his reaching the age of 55.

11 Nov 1835 - Benjamin Broyles in a deed of trust.^[11]

18 May 1839 - Benjamin Broyles, Sr. as executor of his father's estate, sells 94 acres to Thomas Tanner (husband of Benjamin's sister Judith).^[11] This was the acreage of his mother Dilly Broyles. She had passed away in 1836.

1840 - In the federal census he appears to have a son or daughter and their family living with him. In fact, the listing may actually be for Benjamin, Jr., and Benjamin, Sr. is living with them.
