Biography

Born

Elizabeth was born on 2 Jun 1806 and christened 7 Aug 1806 at the Bankside Dissenters, North Shields, daughter of Alexr. Bryson and Elisabeth Clerk.[1]

Childhood

Concerning Elizabeth’s parents, Alexander Bryson and Elisabeth Clark, and her siblings, here’s a very brief summary: They married on 17 Jun 1797, at Christ Church, Tynemouth. Their children were Robert (born 21 Aug 1798, christened 15 Dec 1799), Jane Clark (1800), Elizabeth (1806), Margaret (abt. 1809), Jane (abt. 1812). The later children, Elizabeth, Margaret and Jane were all christened at Bankside Dissenters, North Shields; the two older siblings at Christ Church. Both parents’ names were given each time, including Elisabeth’s maiden name (the spelling of which varied, unlike her Christian name). Other than they stopped christening children after 1812, I don’t know what happened to Alexander and Elisabeth in their later years.

Marriage

Noting that Elizabeth's second child Mary Ann was christened 16 Sep 1821, approx 15 years behind her mother, and Thomas J was all (or most of) a year older, then William and Elizabeth must have married at a very young age.[2] I’m lacking precise details about Thomas J's birth, but in 1841 the first two children's ages were stated as 20 and 19 respectively.[3]

Note that Elizabeth’s maiden name was used as her son John’s middle name, and her daughter Betsey Clark’s middle name. The question then arises who was the “Johnson” who formed the middle name of William (and maybe Thomas). I haven’t worked it out, but I did notice their next-door-neighbour in 1841 was an 82 year old Elizabeth Johnson, so maybe there was a connection. Just a guess.

Elizabeth lived through the censuses of 1851 and 1861, but did not appear again after that date.[4][5]

Died

Bef 1871. Going on deaths registered in Tyneside, Elizabeth either died 6-8 months after the 1861 census (in Dec), or in the three months prior to the 1871 census.[6]
