Death of Mr. James Buchanan.
The Redbank Plains correspondent, writing to the 'Q. Times' under date April 23rd, says: 'It is with much regret I announce the death of an old resident— Mr. James Buchanan — who after a few hours' illness passed away at the residence of his son, Mr. William Buchanan, Widgee Creek, Upper Logan district, at the ripe old age of nearly eighty-six years.
He was a resident of over thirty years' standing in our district, born in Perthshire, Scotland, in 1805, and, after having learned his trade of a cooper in his native town, he sailed for the colonies in 1842, and, as may be seen, was a very old colonist.
The earlier portion of his time was spent in the exciting and dangerous occupation of whaling in the Southern Ocean, notably in the vicinity of New Zealand and Tasmania.
Being an intelligent and humorous narrator, it was interesting to hear him recount his many adventures while engaged in the chase and capture of a whale.
After some years he severed his connection with whaling expeditions, and came to Queensland early in the 'fifties.'
Working at his trade for some time in and around Brisbane, he worked his way to the 'boiling-down' establishment of the well-known John Campbell, of Redbank. While employed at the establishment referred to as foreman cooper, he purchased a farm at Redbank Plains, and, after some years, finally settled down in that district, combining farming with his usual calling.
He removed about eighteen months since to the residence of his son, owing to having suddenly lost his wife, who was accidentally burned some time ago.
'Jemmie,' as he was familiarly called, was universally esteemed and highly respected in the district, and a great favourite with young and old, on account of his many humorous and sterling qualities.
He leaves two sons — John and William, and an only daughter, the wife of Mr. Edward Griffith, our much respected neighbour.
