John Kendrick Bumgardner was born November 25, 1915 to Jacob Alexander Bumgardner, Jr and Lena Kendrick Bumgardner in Jena, Louisiana. He was the oldest of eight children.[1] He died of esophageal cancer, at his home at 5137 East Brookstown Drive, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on March 1, 1979 with his wife Beulah at his side. He is buried at Greenoaks Memorial Park in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. [2]
He was raised on the family farm. His love for farming never died. In the 1930s he lived with his family in Galveston, Texas. His father managed a furniture store there. With the depression, the furniture store was forced to close and they returned to the family farm.
BUMGARDNER, JOHN KENDRICK Died Thursday, March 1, 1979, at his residence in Baton Rouge.·He was 63, a native of Jena. He was a veteran of World War II. Body at Hollabaugh-Spindle's WooddaIe Memorial Chapel from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and after 8 a.m. Saturday. Religious services at 10 a.m, Saturday at the funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Stafford Rogers and the Rev. George Terrell. Burial in Green oaks Memorial Park. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Beulah Gass Bumgardner, Baton Rouge; two daughters, Miss Kathryn Lee Ann Smith and Miss Amy Bumgardner, both of Baton Rouge; two sons, John Larry Bumgardner, Baton Rouge, and James K. Bumgardner, New Orleans; four sisters, Mrs. Wilhelmina Elkins, Robeline, Mrs. Beth Sistrunk and Mrs. Ada Clarie Brown, both of Shreveport, and Mrs. Mary Bass, Slidell; two brothers, Fred E. Bumgardner, Macon, Ga., and James E. Bumgardner, Shreveport. Preceded in death by a brother; Francis M. Bumgardner, and his parents. He was a member of Brookstown Baptist Church and the Capital Masonic Lodge.

1973-1979 (approximate marriage date) until his death. They had a foster grandchild Tara who was adopted by Beulah after his death.
Enlisted on January 6, 1941 in Coast Artillery Corps as an Army mine planter.[6] He enlisted as a Private and completed the Army as a S Sgt. He served in Europe with the 3rd Army under General George Patton and General Omar Bradley. He admired them very much.
John worked in the oil fields most of his life. He retired from Halliburton in the early 60s and bought several restaurants in Livonia, Lottie, and Blanks, Louisiana.
