GEORGE WASHINGTON Burkett was born about 1809 in Tennessee, USA as the probable son of Frederick (Burkhart) Burkett and Regina (Unknown) Burkett.^[1][2][3][4] It is thought that he is the same George who married Lucinda Pinkston on 10 May 1829 in Greene, Tennessee, United States.^[5]. There are no records of Lucinda after their marriage, and the children in George's 1850 census seem spread out whih could indicate there were two different mothers. Additionally, there are two sons William in the 1850 census. This could indicate that they were born of two different mothers as well. When he was 70, he married Margrett Hatfield on 08 Nov 1879.

George and Lucinda probably had the following son:

GEORGE WASHINGTON Burkett and MARY ANN Henderson probably had the following children, but if we assume Lucinda Pinkston might have been his first wife, some of these children could have been Lucinda's:

6. Elliott Murdock Burkett was born in Dec 1846 in Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee, USA. He died on 16 Feb 1919 in Texas, USA. He married Mary Melvina Mourning Pittman on 05 Jan 1869. He married an unknown spouse in 1867 in Tennessee, USA.

In 1860 George (age about 51) was living in Hamilton, Tennessee, United States. District 15, Age 48, born Tenn.^[7]

In 1870 George (age about 61) was living in Murfreesboro/District 2, Rutherford, Tennessee.^[8]

When George was about 70 he married on 8 November 1879.^[9][10][11]

In 1880 George (age about 71) was living in Eaton, Gibson County, Tennessee.^[12]

Parentage Questions

There are many George Washington Burketts born around 1810. A number of them have been attributed to Matthias Burkett and Susanna McNeese. Descendants of this George Washington Burkett, who married Mary Ann Henderson, have DNA matches with other McNeese family members who would have been siblings or cousins to Susanna McNeese. Thus the hunt continues, but the small number of Burketts in Greene County Tennessee at the turn of the 19th century points to the likelihood that either George Washington Burkett and Matthias Burkett were siblings, or that Matthias was George's uncle. Since it seems that Frederick was married at least twice (he has children from around the beginning of the Revolutionary war, and then married Rachel Attershall in 1786), it is more likely that Matthias and George are half brothers, with Frederick being the father to both of them. Still speculation, but as DNA matches start to solidify, perhaps this can be better determined.

In the 1880 census, George Washington Burkett stated that his father was born in Pennsylvania. This all but eliminates the idea that his grandfather was Uriah Burkett of Connecticut, as his sons all seemed to stay in Connecticut. It is believed that he is the son of Frederick Burkett, who was born in Pennsylvania, moved to Virginia prior to the Revolutionary War, and then moved to Tennessee around 1800. George Washington Burkett was found in Greene County, Tennessee in 1830, along with probable father Frederick, and likely sibling Isaac. Other probable close relatives are John Burkett, Michael Burkett and Richard Burkett, all living in Washington County, Virginia, across the Tennessee/Virginia State Line.

In attempting to connect Isaac Burkett and George Washington Burkett as siblings, their paths have been tracked. Isaac's path looks like this:

These paths do not include a possible 1840 census George. However, there is a George Burdit/Burchit listed in Rhea County right under Isaac Burkett, and the family relationships line up. There seems to be another couple living with them. There are two males born between 1811 and 1820 (probably our George and other family member/brother?), and then a female born between 1811-1820 (Mary Ann Henderson), and another female born between 1821-1825?). This could be the spouse of the other male. There is only one female child under 5, and both Caroline and Catherine were though to be born before 1840. Catherine's census records, however, run from 1838 to 1841 as her given year of birth, so it is possible that she was born after the 1840 census was enumerated. Then there is one male under 10 and two under 5. There is only 1 known male born to George and Mary Ann prior to 1840. That is William who would have been 9. The two under 5s could be children who died before 1850, children of the other couple, or a mixture of both. In any event, it seems that George and Isaac lived in close proximity to each other on the Tennessee/Georgia border in 1850 and 1860. In 1870, George had moved West to Rutherford, TN, and by 1880 was in Gibson county where many of his descendants remain to this day.

Census Record Reconciliation

For some time, George Washington Burkett was linked to a Find A Grave record that showed a birth date of 15 Jan 1814 and a death date of 15 Jul 1895. It is no longer believed that this is the information of this particular George Washington Burkett. There is no evidence that the GW Burkett in this record ever lived in Madison County, Arkansas, and indeed there is another George W Burkett who was listed in the 1850 Census in Madison, Arkansas.
