"Reuben Burr of the Township of Witchurch, County of York, The Home District and Province of Upper Canada, being the son of William Burr and Ann his wife of the Township of Rickliam (sp?), County of Buchs and State of Pennsylvania was born the 15th , 3rd month of 1766 and married to Elizabeth Cleaver, daughter of John Cleaver and Sarah, his wife of the Township of Horshane (sp?), County of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania the 5th, 1 month of 1795 her birth being on the 4th, 8th month 1767.

Reuben Burr, born about 1766 in Pennsylvania,[1] emigrated to Upper Canada with his wife Elizabeth and their children in 1805. They settled in Whitchurch Township,[2] where Reuben built a sawmill in 1828.[3]

<His son Reuben Burr was the founder of Woodbridge, Ontario, formerly named Burwick. [4]

He passed away in 1842.[5]

Reuben, when twenty-one years old, migrated to Lincoln County, Upper Canada, stayed there three years, then returned to Pennsylvania where he married Elizabeth Cleaver and remained for fourteen years. He returned to Canada in 1805, and is considered one of the original Quaker settlers of Newmarket, and original member of the Yonge St. Quakers. After living for a while in Whitchurch he settled for a while in East Gwillimbury, Lot 18, Concession 2 (Bayview Ave.) He then moved to the Aurora area where he was known as a “joiner”. In the small village of Patterson, Vaughan Township, Lot 41, Concession 2, Reuben built a sawmill in 1828, which operated for twenty years. Known as an excellent mechanic he built the first fanning mill in use north of Toronto also in Vaughan Township. He was disowned by the Quakers (reason unknown ) and became a “Methodists. Reuben was born March 14, 1766, Richland Twp. Bucks. Pennsylvania and died Sept. 21, 1842. He married Elizabeth Cleaver Jan. 1, 1794.

"... On lot 41 in the same Concession [Concession 3 in Vaughan] a saw mill was built by Reuben Burr in the year 1828, which was worked for about 20 years. Mr. Burr was an excellent mechanic, and constructed the first fanning mill in use north of Toronto. Rowland Burr, his son, was one of the most noted mill and factory builders in the early days. He put up a flour mill, known as the Greenfield Mill, on Lot 41, which was leased to Mr. Shepherd and was destroyed by fire about the year 1840." [6]
