Marysville Evening Democrat - 8/6/1917, p4 - BYRON BURRIS Dies At Brown's Valley - Browns Valley, Yuba Co., August 6.
Byron Burris, one of the best known residents of Yuba County, died at his home here yesterday morning, after a prolonged illness. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the family home and interment will be in the Browns Valley cemetery. Kelly Bros. of Marysville will have charge of the arrangements.
Deceased was a native of Wisconsin, where he was born on March 17, 1849. An infant in arms when his parents came to California, Byron Burris was reared in Spanish Flat, where his father engaged in business after reaching this state, receiving his earlier education in the public school of the town until 1858, when he came with his father and mother to the ranch three miles from Browns Valley and remained with them until he was 21 years of age. Purchasing a band of 500 sheep he engaged in the sheep business, taking up a homestead four miles from the home of his father, and continued in the business until 1882. - In that year he sold out and engaged in the mercantile business in Browns Valley with T. H. Hibbert, carrying on business under the firm name of Hibbert & Burris until 1900. Selling his interest in the general merchandise store, he devoted his time to mining interests and in 1901 he located the "1901" mine, having located the "Bessie" mine in 1896.
For a long time Burris and the late Colonel Forbes were in partnership in lands in this section, and John Rodda was also interested with him. The 160 acres of land which Burris and Hibbert owned on the Yuba river was sold for $100 an acre and of late years has been worked by the dredgers. - On October 11, 1885, Mr. Burris was married to ANNA SERSANOUS [Oct 1885], a native of this county, who survives him. There also survive one son, Byron, and two daughters, Hazel and Evelyn. One other daughter was killed two years ago in an automobile accident in which Supervisor Casey lost his life. A brother, Joseph, living here, and a sister, Mrs. Francis Roy, of Oakland, also survive him.
Byron was born in 1849. He was the son of Swearingham Burris and Hannah Wilson. He passed away in 1917.
