Biography
Elias H Burris was born in 1827 in probably Henry County, Indiana, the third son of Jacob and Christina Burris. In 1852 he married Beulah Magdalena Bowman and together they had six children. In 1870 the family moved to Dickinson County, Kansas, then in 1878 to Jefferson County, Kansas. Like his father, he spent his entire life farming. When his died in 1885, he was buried in Coal Creek Cemetery, near his farm. His funeral was noted in a local newspaper, as far as they knew, his was the first secular funeral in the Valley Falls area. By his directive, no clergyman was to officiate at his burial.
