James was born in 1809 in North Carolina. He was the son of Joseph Burt and Ann Read. Although the exact date/year is unknown, James moved with his parents from North Carolina sometime prior to 1840. On 18 Feb 1843 in Alabama, he married Elizabeth Killough (nee Baird, 1813-1849; dau. of Alexander & Sarah Baird). They had one child, son Henry. She also had 3 children from her prior marriage. Elizabeth died in 1849 and James married again on 12 Feb 1849 to Frances Anne Welch (nee Gibson). They had 3 known children. Frances also had a daughter from a previous marriage. Living in Talladega, Alabama throughout most of his life where he worked as a farmer, it is here he passed away in 1896. He is buried at the Oak Hill Cemetery.
