John Michael “Mike” Buttram was born near Pea Ridge Arkansas on November 26, 1861.^[1] He was the son of Elijah Buttram and Nancy Miser.

On January 28, 1883 He married Nancy Ellen Smith, born September 4 1866.^[2] She was the daughter of William Henry Smith (1836-1870), a Union soldier in the Civil War, and Nancy Matilda Myres (1836-1901). Nancy Ellen was the grand daughter of Peter Myres (Born 1801 in Kentucky) and Temperance Myres (born 1819 in Indiana). They had 7 children.

Following their marriage. Mike and Ellen lived in a double log cabin in the Pea Ridge community but in the Spring of 1893, Mike took his family to Indian Territory (Now N.E. Oklahoma) where part of the time the family live in a tent while Mike worked tending sheep. Late in the fall they returned to the Little Missouri Hollow Community near Jane, Missouri..^[3]

In subsequent years the J.M. Buttram family lived in Bear Hollow, Caverna, Missouri, Locust Grove, McDonald County, Missouri; and Blaine County, Idaho. Mike and Ellen later returned to Missouri and spent their remaining years in McDonald County, Missouri.^[3]

They lived in White Rock Twp, (Jane) Mc Donald County, Missouri in 1900,^[4] and 1910, where John did General Farming. At this time they had Ruben E-22 who was also farming, Lena-19, Nora-14, Elsie-11, and Velma-7 in the home.^[5]

His wife Ellen died December 3, 1934, at the age of 68, in McDonald County, Missouri, and was buried in the Buttram Chapel Cemetery in Pea Ridge, Benton County, Arkansas.

Mike died November 29, 1950 in Pea Ridge, Benton, Arkansas. Both are buried in the Buttram Chapel Cemetery at Pea Ridge, Arkansas.^[1]

EARLY CHILDHOOD

Mike fell into a barrel of molasses as a child . When his mother and “Granny” Nickels pulled him out, Nancy realized that the contents of the barrel could not be replaced and she asked “Granny” what do do. “Granny” Nickels said very quietly, “Well, the barrel of molasses is all right to use, Nancy, just what is stuck to little Mike is all you need to throw away.”^[3]
