Recently, there was a mistaken merge[2] of Johannis Buys [Buys-682] and Johannis Buys [Buys-682]. This note is to explain the reasons for separating these two individuals, examining first the similarities, followed by the proven differences.
Similarities:
Both men appear to have been born in New York Colony, probably in the Dutchess County area of the lower Hudson River valley.
Their birth year for both was about 1745.
Their birth names were (approximately) Johannes or Johannis Buys or Buis, which, when anglicized, became John Boice or Boyce.
Both men had sons named Jacob.
Revolutionary War activity:
John Boice [Boice-622] was a proven United Empire Loyalist who served with Butler's Rangers in the Revolutionary War. [3][4]
There is no evidence that Johannis Buys [Buys-682] was a loyalist.
Residence after 1783:
John Boice [Boice-622] migrated with his family to the Niagara region in Canada after the American Revolutionary War. [3]
Johannis Buys [Buys-682] stayed in New York State after the Revolutionary War.
Two different Jacobs:
Jacob Boice [Boice-623], the son of John Boice [Boice-622], successfully petitioned in Niagara for land as the son of a United Empire Loyalist in 1818. Also in that petition, he provides an affidavit regarding his loyalty to the British Crown during "the late war" (the War of 1812). [5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Johannes by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
