Lady Mary Campbell was the daughter of Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll and his wife, Lady Margaret Douglas. She is sometimes described as their third daughter,[1] and her birth date is given as after 1634, based on a "genealogy given in Records of Argyll, which belongs to 1634, it is said Lord Lorne had then two sons and two daughters"[2]
An antenuptial contract of marriage between Lady Mary Campbell and George (Sinclair), 6th Earl of Caithness was issued 18-24 July 1657, where Mary is granted lands of Thurso East and others in parishes of Thurso, Olrick, Halkirk, Watine, Dunnett, which were all in the Earldom and sheriffdom of Caithness, in return for a tocher (dowry) of 22,000 Scots.[3] She is stated to be the second daughter in this document, but it may be that she was the second surviving daughter.
They were married on 22 September 1657 at Rosneath Castle, a seat of the Earl of Argyll, though friends of Caithness were not pleased with the marriage and the amount of the tocher.[4]
