The deceased, who was 77 years of age, was a native of Inverness (Scotland), and came out to this country when three years of age. He married, at the age of 34, Miss Elizabeth Maher, who, with ten children, survive him. An inquest was held on Sunday, before the Coroner (Mr D. McDougall), when evidence, as published hereunder, was given. Elizabeth Campbell, widow of the deceased, stated that the deceased had not enjoyed good health for some time. He refused to call in the doctor. He complained of a pain in his chest. He seemed better, but became ill on Saturday. He had a fairly good tea and seemed much better. He suddenly fell face downwards, and when lifted up he seemed to be quite dead. His life was not insured. He left some property, valued at about £1500. He left a will. He was 77 years of age. Arthur Vaughan Campbell, son of deceased, deposed that about a fortnight ago his father complained of feeling unwell. He said that he did not feel bad enough to call in a doctor. After he had finished his tea he seemed in very good spirits; this was about 6.30 pm. Witness noticed him sitting in a chair outside, but did not speak to him. Witness went into the kitchen, and while there heard a noise as if somebody was falling. He found the deceased lying face downwards on the verandah, and ran over to him. Deceased never spoke again, but gave two gasps. Dr. Bowman deposed to having examined the body of the deceased. It was well nourished. There were no marks of violence on the body, and no symptoms of poisoning. He had known the deceased for the last 30 years. From what he had heard, he concluded that the de eased met his death from heart failure. He did not consider it necessary to make a post mortem. .
