Biography

Lady Janet Campbell was the daughter of Archibald Campbell, 4th Earl of Argyll.[1] She first married Tormod MacLeod, 12th of MacLeod, son of Alasdair 'Crottach' MacLeod. She next married Hector 'Og' Maclean, of Duart, [1] son of Hector 'Mor' Maclean, Duart and Morven and his wife Mary Macdonald. Janet is said to have married Hector Allansoun and they reportedly had a daughter who married Meil Mor MacLean of Quinish.[2]

Hi Becky, Hector was a common name in the MacLean Clan (which makes unravelling family histories very difficult at times). But they are definitely different people. Lady Janet's first husband was the Clan Chief - so "of Duart" would be the way to identify him. The second Hector was son of Allan MacLean (hence "Allansoun" is included in this Hector's entry). I would use these as the differentiators - and as these men were known as such throughout the genealogical histories, it will be clear who you are talking about. hopefully this makes sense. Kind regards. Suzanne.

The two men named Hector McLean have very different profiles but even if they're related I'd think they have something to differentiate their names.

Did Janet marry two separate Hector MacLeans? The two Hector seem to be different people and not merge candidates. Or is one of the Hectors incorrectly attached here? I don't know this line well enough to determine quickly.

Hi Marty,

based on my research, Lady Janet married four times: a) firstly to Hector Og MacLean of Duart (1557). Hector apparently died around 1573, and they had Lachlan. b) secondly to Hector Allanson (Hector s/o Ailean na Sop MacLean), and was Hector Og MacLeans cousin. She must have married Hector Allanson between 1575 and 1578, because he was executed at Breachacha [sp?] Castle in 1578. c) thirdly to Tormod MacLeod in 1580. Tormod died in 1585. (according to the History of the MacLeods) d) John MacIain of Ardnamurchan (Clan Donald Vol 3 - p 212) - there is a record in the Register of the Privy Seal that the marriage was dated 12 April 1588.

So am I understanding correctly there is no difference in the names if the two men? I am working on her mother's profile and writing about her three children and just commented about the two men with different profiles but the exact name- I saw the comments from you and Marty after asking my question and honestly wanted to clarify there are no qualifiers to differentiate thetwo names as it is confusing; but if accurate, I accept it :)

Thank you for your time- Becky Elizabeth
