Biography

[Category The Cantrell Family Project

Descendant of William Cantrell, the first Cantrell in North America. William arrived with Captain John Smith in Jamestown, Virginia on April 20, 1607.

James was born about 1801. He is the son of Aaron Cantrell and Martha Smith. James passed away before 1870 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. He appears on the 1860 census, but not on the 1870. His widow Martha is living in DeKalb County, Tennessee with their son Charles, age 15.

James married Elizabeth Kirby about 1822, probably in Tennessee. A marriage record has not yet been found for James and Elizabeth. However, they are named as parents on the death record of their son Aaron Cantrell in 1919.[1]

In 1850 James is living in DeKalb County, Tennessee with his children, Minerva, Barbara, Smith, Aaron, William, Nancy, John, and James. He is apparently a widower, since there is no wife in the household.[2]

Marriage record for Martha Moore and James Cantrell can be found on ancestry.com showing marriage date of 13 Oct 1853 in Dekalb Co., TN I believe that at least one of Martha's children (Mary) are listed mistakenly as a Cantrell on the 1860 census. then on the 1870 census for the again widowed Martha Cantrell, one sees both surnames - Cantrell and Moore listed. My tree is posted at Ancestry.com with dna on-line. Also, familytreedna - # B514429. Second opinion, anyone?

I recently began researching the "Moore" branch of my tree and looking to dna matches for hints. I share DNA with Cantrell descendants, but I am not a descendant of James or his 1st wife, Elizabeth. I am a descendant of his 2nd wife, Martha!

I believe that Martha and James' first wife, Elizabeth, were in fact sisters. Martha's first husband was Harmon "Hermon" Moore, born 1810 Stokes Co., NC, d. 1847 Dekalb Co., TN. Martha is listed as a widow on the 1850 census in Dekalb, TN. James Cantrell also is listed as a widower on the Dekalb Co., TN census in 1850 with Elizabeth having died between 1844 - 1850.
