Biography

Bessie Genevieve Carothers was born on 4 May 1895 in Centralia, Nemaha, Kansas, USA as the daughter of William Alexander Carothers (abt.1864-1943) and Harriet Mary "Hattie" (Lambert) Carothers (abt.1873-abt.1920).

In 1900, William Carothers (34) and "Hattie" (26), who had been married for 6 years, and 4 children - Myrtle M Carothers (1894-1980) (6), Bessie (5), Mabel Carothers (3), and William Harry Carothers (abt.1898-bef.1998) (1), were living in their owned (free of mortgage) home in Home, Nemaha, Kansas. William was working as a barber.^[1]

In 1910 the family had moved to Main Street in Precinct 42, Whitman, Washington, USA where he continued to work as a barber with his own shop. The family had grown with the arrival of two additional children, Jesse R (Carothers) Prior (1900-1972) (9) and Grave M Carothers (7).^[2]

Bessie and Harry Lincoln Clark (1920-1997), both from Garfield, married on 14 Oct 1916 in Spokane, Washington, USA. His mother was shown as "Power"; hers clearly shown as Lambert- both born in Illinois.^[3]

In 1940 Bessie (44) and Harry L (44), who are shown as having only an 8th grade education, and their son Harry Edward (20) (shown to have not graduated from high school, highest level being 3 years of high school) were living in Garfield, Whitman, Washington where they had also been living in 1935. Harry is working as a farmer.^[4]

In April 1943, at the time of her father's death in Colfax, she was living in Garfield where the family had moved in 1902. Her siblings as shown in his obituary were: W H Carothers (Spokane), Myrtle Carothers (Garfield), Mrs. A W Feek (Seattle), Mrs. W S Prior (Colfax). At this same time she had one niece, one grand-niece, and one nephew in the army.^[5]

Bessie G Carothers Clark died on 24 Mar 1958 in Garfield, Whitman Washington, USA. Parents shown as William A Carothers and Mary Lambert (i.e. Mary Harriet "Hattie" Lambert Carothers.^[6]
