William Carpenter (William, Joseph, William) was born about 1688 in Pawtuxet, Bristol, Rhode Island. He was the son of William Carpenter and Elizabeth, whose surname is unknown. See the excellent research of Eugene Cole Zubrinsky, dated 9 June 2017, pages 7-8, regarding William Carpenter Senior, father of William Carpenter, presenting the argument that the surname of William Senior's wife is not known.[1][2]
William married Elizabeth Prior about 1708 in New York. Elizabeth was born in 1683 in New York. They had a child, Sarah Carpenter, who was born on 30 Jun 1712.[3]
"A house carpenter, William owned land in 1718, near Armonk, Westchester County, New York. His wife became estranged to him on account of their different religious beliefs, which so affected his after life that in 1730 he gave to his daughter (and possibly only child) one half of all his estate. The other half he had sold previously to her husband. He then moved to Westchester county, New York to live with his father. It is said he bought a plot of land near Pleasantville."[4]
William died sometime after 1732 in Westchester, New York.[5]
