Archibald Carter, son of naval shipwright, James Carter and his wife, Alice Coles, was born in Portsmouth on the 19th of March 1892. [1] The family lived in Montgomerie Rd. [2] [3] Archie served an apprenticeship as a boat builder and then joined the Royal Navy on the 20th of March 1914 and on 19 June was posted to the battleship HMS Irresistible [4]which sailed for the Dardanelles on the 1st of February 1915. Irresistible was sunk by Turkish gunfire attempting to force a passage through the Dardanelles on the 18th of March. [5]The survivors were taken aboard HMS Europa. Archie was awarded a DSM for his exploits at the time. His naval life quietened down after that. [6]
Archie married Trixie Fryer at Weymouth Registration Office on the 27th of November 1920 [7] and it was decided that Trixie's daughter, Peggy, would be raised to believe that he was her father. His only child, Aymer James, was born and died in 1924. [8][9]
Approaching retirement Archie found himself in another war in 1939, losing his home, 54 St Augustine Rd [10]to an air raid in January 1941. He and Trixie managed to secure a temporary home across the harbour in Gosport.
Archie died in Gosport War Memorial Hospital on the 30th of May 1951, [11]after an exploratory operation to determine the extent of his cancer. He was cremated at Swaythling in Southampton. [12]
