James Carter was born circa 1750, in Virginia and served as an officer, during the American Revolutionary War. As a Captain, serving as Aide-de-Camp to Colonel Elijah Clarke, James was killed in action, on September 18, 1780, in Augusta, Richmond county, Georgia. [1]

James Carter is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A019945. DAR records indicate that his wife's name was Mary Martin. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of Farish Carter and his wife, Eliza McDonald. [2]

Major James Carter (promoted posthumously) is buried in the Bugg Family Cemetery at Pendleton King Park in Augusta, Georgia. [3]

James would have been born around 1777 and was about 3 years old when his father died at the battle of Augusta 17 Sep 1780. In 1795, his older brother John Martin Carter became his guardian. They were living in Washington, Wilkes Co., Ga. at the time. 15 Apr 1795, James Carter and his brother John M. Carter were executors for their brother in law Daniel Terendet [husband of their sister Sarah] who died . 31 Oct 1796 when Thomas Winn, 3rd husband of his mother Letitia Martin [Carter, McFArlin, Winn] wrote his will, James, his brother =John M. Carter and his mother Letitia Winn are appointed executors. By 1798, he is no longer acting with any of these executorships. 3 Oct 1800, John M. Carter is administrator of the estate of James Carter, dec'd"
