Thomas married Isabella Seton, daughter of John Seton of Pabroath,[3] on 3 October 1763 in Stanwick St John, Yorkshire, England.[4] They had the following children:

Thomas and his wife lived much on the continent, probably because his health was delicate, and they saw Voltaire in Switzerland, according to a memoir by his granddaughter Catherine Cayley.[6]

Thomas became the 5th Cayley baronet on the death of his father in 1791.[3][5]

Thomas died on 15 March 1792 and was buried at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire on 21 March.[7][8] (Some transcripts wrongly give the year as 1791.[9]
