Biography

Thomas Cayley was baptised on 23 August 1732 at All Saints, Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire.^[1]

He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he matriculated in 1751.^[2]

Thomas married Isabella Seton, daughter of John Seton of Pabroath,^[3] on 3 October 1763 in Stanwick St John, Yorkshire, England.^[4] They had the following children:

• George , who became the 6th Cayley baronet^[3][5]
• Elizabeth, who married Benjamin Blackden^[5]
• Philadelphia Sarah, who married Barry Slater^[5]
• Isabella, who married Launelot Shadwell^[5]
• Anne, who married George Worsley^[5]

Thomas and his wife lived much on the continent, probably because his health was delicate, and they saw Voltaire in Switzerland, according to a memoir by his granddaughter Catherine Cayley.^[6]

Thomas became the 5th Cayley baronet on the death of his father in 1791.^[3][5]

Thomas died on 15 March 1792 and was buried at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire on 21 March.^[7][8] (Some transcripts wrongly give the year as 1791.^[9]
